I have super-thick hair, I mean really, really thick & it absolutely refused to curl unless I drench it in super hold hair spray. Any suggestions?

Try an elevated or layered cut. This will take a lot of the weight out of your hair. Then try playing with the curling iron again. Ask for help from your hairdresser. And if you still can't get your hair to curl, try a body permanent. A body perm is done on large perm rods. It can't frizz that way, and the curl will hold for a few days after you use the curling iron on it.
The smallest rod I would recommend for you would be a gray rod. The rods are a specific size for each color. Have the hairdresser use a gray rod, then the next size up, then a gray rod, and the next size up. This will give you a wavy pattern you can wear without using the curling iron everyday. It will also give you a lot of versatility in your hair styles. Have fun. I wish I could do it for you.
