In response to Roxy first of all. My little chihuahua, Kia, and best friend of 7 years was hit on a road. It was a freak accident. I don't think it is fair for you to say that one should not own a dog for it. She was very well cared for and well respected by my entire family.
Now for the question. I am sorry to hear your dog was hit. This is a very traumatic thing to have happen. A mutt really is the best choice because 1. They are inexpensive 2. They are actually often more healthy than a purebred dog 3. You will have your own, very unique, dog. Possibly something mixed with a Shepherd. They are amazing, loyal dogs. Another good dog is a boxer. Our family breeds boxers and have had the best of luck with them. Although, as my mom says, "they don't get their brains till they are about 2". Good luck on finding the dog of your dreams! Try just going to a shelter and hanging out. You want to choose a dog that reacts to you when you approach their pen but in a friendly way, not too aggressive and not overly excited.

I think you should just go down to your local shelter and interact with the dogs there. Take a look at the older dogs, too. Just get the one that you think has the best personality.

I'm sorry for the loss of your dog but I do hope that you find a new best friend =)

Edit: After reading what Roxy said, I think she needs to lay off a bit. It's not your fault that your dog got ran over unless you left the gate open, wasn't watching him or... whatever. It doesn't mean you can't be a responsible dog owner. If she was a real animal lover, she would be sorry for the fact that you lost your dog and wouldn't be making harsh accusations about something that she has no facts on.

I would recommend deciding on a few traits you want in a dog (like energy level, trainability, etc.), and then going to your local animal shelter and looking at the mid-sized mutts there. You can explain to the staff if you have any specific requirements, and they can help you to narrow down your search. But a shelter mutt is definitely my top recommendation.

Purebreds are expensive, so they're probably not what you're looking for. But if you do decide you would like a certain breed, I'd recommend taking a breed selector quiz on the internet to get a few breed ideas.

Don't worry about ''type''. Worry about personality and energy level, and whether or not that is compatible with your lifestyle. Go shelter-hopping. Meet & greet the dogs (do not judge them based on breed), and see which one you fall in love with.

That's the type of dog you should get.

P.S. Secure your fence & protect your front door. Don't want your new dog escaping and meeting the same fate as your previous one!

I don't think that a dog would want an owner that 1. Does not know how to use proper grammar (RUNNED is NOT a word..the correct way is RAN), and 2. Does not know how to keep a dog out of the road. Sorry that I am so rude, but I hate when people let their dog into the dangerous road! It is very irresponsible! I don't think that you should get a dog!.......................................... RESPONSE TO ADDITIONAL DETAILS: You cant f-ing get pissed with me, its not my fault that I do not know every frekin event that happens in your life. How am I supposed to know how your dog got RAN over if you don't tell us how your dog got RAN over?? You are a horrible irrational person and I feel bad for you! You just told me to go to hell just because care about animals! I would suggest googleing "anger management"!
