The one you can make sound good. A slate type call has a sound that carries a long way, box call is easy to start out with, and a mouth call does not require you to move much. You can get good calls kinda cheap, buy a few, make some noise and see what works the best in the woods.
Good Luck,
Dave

Do you mean best brand, or best type? As for types, box and slate calls are the best for beginners to learn and they work, but it can be too much movement when you got birds nearby. But a mouth call is the best if you can master it, but it's tough. I practice with my mouth calls all year, just sitten around the house or hangen on the back porch.
If your talken about brands, I prefer Redhead brand, I'm just a Bass Pro guy though, there may be better ones out there.

The first call I ever used was a plunger call, and it worked, pretty good. After that, I learned how to use a diaphraghm call, and that's my favorite. I also use a slate call, but I think the best is the diaphragm. You have both hands free, but you have to be careful not to suck it down your throat. That's not much fun.

I ordered a "Cody" turkey call from a Cabellas magazine..it works for me.

I've never tried a Box call, but I hear they work good.

Good Luck to you.

I'd say any slate call made by Knight & Hale. They make the best calls.
