no, the mother dog was not starving:

the mother dog knew there was something wrong with the puppies. dogs know when there is something wrong with their puppies and will often destroy them--very sad-i feel bad for you (and her too). your neighbor should have her dog spayed and not let her have anymore puppies.

No, the dog was not starving.

When a mother dog eats her pups, she is being a "good mother", according to the animal kingdom. What I mean is that the mother, for one reason or another, did not think the pup was going to live, or was dead when it was born. It sounds harsh, but that was probably what she was doing.

Has more to do with maternal instinct than hunger. I assure you that the dog didn't do it for their own good, but for the good of the puppie. The maternal instinct kicked in and told her to kill her puppie because it wasn't going to make it anyway so she took it out of its pain. I have seen this in dogs and cats so it isn't that uncommon.

Dogs will eat their pups for several reasons. The top two being: Stress & illness.

If the mother is overly-stressed, she will take it out on her young.

If the pups show signs of illness (whether or not the owners can notice it), the mother can and usually will, kill the pup, if not, then she will reject caring for him/her.

There has been a lot of debate over why they do this, but most people agree that it is because of a defect with the puppies and poor mothering instinct with the mother.

maybe the poor thing was starving, or perhaps something was wrong with the pups. I have heard of this with cats before. sorry you were traumatized.....
