There are different ways of viewing hell... and I doubt if all the denominations in these religions all believe in hell. You are probably talking about hell described by the literature Divine Purgatory by Dante Alighiera. All I can remember in the Bible is all about hell where there is gnashing of teeth. But some Christians believe that eternity (that is because after death there is soul that lives) away from God and without relationship with God is what is termed as hell. Essentially, if God is the source of all good and life and happiness and joy, then eternity with God in heaven is the exact opposite of hell. I don't see hell as punishment, I see hell as a consequence of not choosing eternity with God.

no. Think about it. People have had an entire life to live to accept jesus and everything. An entire life to love their Dad, and an entire life of sin without repentance. The fact is, once they die, it's over. If they die, they get judged and go to hell because god can't have sin in his kingdom. i used to think, "shouldn't punishment be present until the person being punished changes?" but i learned that this kind of punishment is just because the sinners going to hell can't enter heaven. It ins't easy for God to toss his children in a lake of fire and sulfer either. He has no choice

I guess it depends on who is evaluating the crime. If we judged our own crimes, we could all justify our way to heaven. But if it is a holy God who cannot tolerate evil, then I would say the judgment is indeed just. Who are we to tell God that He is unjust? Who gives us the power to say that in the first place? If requires a perfect standard for us, how can we oppose Him? I would say, according to rules He set when He created the universe, He is just in sending people to hell for the wrong we have committed.

What if we are in hell right now? After all, why were we put here? Why are we not simply born in heaven with God? Why do we need to be redeemed to get back to heaven? What is this place really? What is it's purpose?

no, it is not just. but the concept of G-d punishing people to an eternity in hell does not exist in judaism, so we should not be included in your question.

You send yourself to hell, God doesnt. You have a choice in which path you take, the path to God (heaven) or the path away from God (lake of fire) . God forces no one to follow Him, He leaves the choice all up to you.
