An alien registration number is assigned to those that have petitioned for permanent residency, K-1, K-3, immigrant visas, or in some cases temporary residency (such as J visas, work permit for L2 workers etc.), or have been in deportation or removal proceedings. The 'A' number is unique to the alien and is an identifier. As was stated by previous posts, the 'A' number is not the SSN.

An Alien number is on the permanent resident card, it has it listed, but the social security number is totally different. I'm a permanent resident (from Canada) and you get an alien number and a social security number. They're separate. I think the alien number is so they can track you based on just being from your country into the states, and the social security number is for your business in the states. They are totally separate. The alien number should be on the front of the permanent resident card, the first thing listed on the right of the picture. It starts with INS A# and then a nine digit number. At least mine is. After that it lists birthdate, etc.

The alien number is not a SSN. It is a unique identifier issued by Dept of Homeland Security (INS is now a part of that Dept.).

A legal resident with employment authorization documents may apply for and receive a SSN.

Someone that is not employment authorized will not be given an SSN. They can contact IRS and apply for a Taxpayer Identification Number instead (TIN).

I thought an alien number was the number you used to track an illegal immigrant by if they were being deported and detained.

They get a social security number if they are legal to work here.
