Quick and short:
Eisenhower sent the U-2 spyplane over Russia at the time when a thaw(peaceful coexistence) might be possible. Russia shot the plane down(it was supposed to be incredibly ahead of times and not detectable by radar) and Kruschev showed the wreckage and the pilot(Gary Powers) to the world. Russia had said it had shot down an american plane but Eisenhower decnied the existence of such a plane. He lied to the American public and then Kruschev showed his prize on world wide TV, exposing Eisenhower's lie and destroying U.S.-USSR relations.
