I forgot to mention we live 10,000 miles away, and only talk by phone.

He was probably hoping you would open up a bit and respond effectively to his comments.

We are men, but we are also human. We like when things are certain, but then again when is anything certain? The higher the probability of success, the more we will bite into the temptation. Throw some obvious hints back at him and hope for the best. If it comes down to it, go to him yourself and ask him out or just tell him how you feel. You'll be surprised on how well humans can communicate once the uncomfort level is supressed or nullified completely.

Good Luck

Hello.
Could be many things, not just the distant but he much rather have you as a friend. He may feel, if he does pursue the friendship into more, for what ever reason doesn't pan out he has not only lost you as a girlfriend but lost his best friend relationship as well! (And he doesn't want that to ever happen and to scared to chance it)
Somethings are never the same after a falling out.
Doesn't want to cross that line, works better for him as per say friends only.
I suggest if don't mind... Why don't you ask him out if feel that strong about it and see what his come back is on that topic?
Maybe wrong, but never know if don't ask him rather then us.
Thank you, hope all turns out one way or another.

Probably b/c he's not into you but he does recognize that you are a good catch for some other guy. I'm sure you know plenty of attractive guys that you like, but wouldn't want to date -- it's probably the same situation with you and your guy friend.

Because he's obviously not telling you the whole truth. To me, he thinks of you as a little sister, or maybe he's just being REALLY HONEST!

either
a) he wants you to ask first
b) wants you to have confidence to go find someone else! (which could backfire like it sounds it has)

idk what else he could be doing. maybe he is just being overly nice? but then he is a guy...so that is unlikely...
