We live in Jackson, MI and I hav been searching the net for about an hour and can not even find building codes or regulations. I am wanting to put a hood up into the ceiling and put recessed lighting around it. Cool right?! OK one problem... they don't sell just the blower around here from the hood. I was told to go to a resale store and "junk" a hood... any other suggestion? I don't really want one becuase I didn't use the one that was there anyway. Haven't used it since we've lived here (about 9 months).

As a building contractor I've never heard that a range hood is actually required. If you had a well functioning hood, you would probably use it. For what you are describing look for an exhaust fan, they are made in many different capacities. I would recommend a fan of at least 200 cfm or larger depending on the size of your kitchen.

you can get away with just having a ceiling exhaust fan instead of a range hood, you do really need something to take away the steam from cooking

Yuk, how can you live without a range-hood. They are as necessary as a hot/cold tap. Everything gets greasy and dirty without one (unless you dont do any cookin)
