The problem is both. One blame another classic example of it. i graduated from high school whole time i was in school there wasn't a lot of homework. The problem is what you said watching t.v playing video games chatting with Friends.parents need to limit them on these activity's that are basically useless and cause nothing but stupidity and laziness. A lot of parents are not strict at all on there kids about school. If parents don't have enough time to help set up some rules. if you don't get above 3.0 average ill take something away that you realy realy like most.from you till you get it back up. Yes more and more parents are getting irresponsible. But also to me many selfish kids and parents. In the schools have more people watching the halls to prevent those fights. Spread them out so there's always an watchful eye some. People think this is not preventable. it is it just they are to lazy and wanna save money. Schools need to be strict and the parents need to be strict about school. If more and more of that. Happens fills in the gaps things run smoother. But of course I don't see that happening anytime soon.

What school did you go to? My school wasn't like that at all. I think schools now are scary as hell. There were bullies back in the day but I sure don't remember kids shooting each other and beating up teachers, etc. If anything, kids were actually scared of authority figures back then. Nowadays, alot of kids don't respect authority and do whatever they please. If you don't believe that, have a look at all the underage crime rates and how much they've increased.
I also don't remember hearing Christians say how great schools were back in the day. I must've missed that. Life in general seems more violent to me. Alot of kids run wild. That's the parents' fault, not the schools. Religion has nothing to do with this issue. It's an issue of accountability. Some parents need to learn the word "NO". I know I didn't pray in school and no teacher ever taught me about God.

Interesting point of view. Let's compare.
The American students are falling behind in almost every area of academics, and sometimes even behind students of 3rd world countries.
I can see, even on here, teenagers cannot spell, punctuate, capitalize, or even make a coherent sentence. I also see on here where they cannot do even basic math. If you'll notice also, students nowadays could not tell you were certain countries are on the map, nor care.
American history has pretty much been flushed down the toilet in American schools. There was a poll taken and the question was asked when the Vietnam War started. The answers given were approximately around the time of the Civil War! Is this modern education?
Emphasis is placed on "cultural diversity" and "popular culture" rather than even the basic of academics. The schools are so busy peddling homosexual agendas that they're forgetting to teach students to read! In a case in Massachusetts, students were assembled in the gymnasium, and they were given demonstrations on homosexual sex positions and indoctrinated in the homosexual agenda. This was done unbeknownst to the parents. Many parents who found out were outraged and it became national news.
I don't remember wide scale shooting in school when I was a student. Neither do my parents. I don't remember there being the extent of drug use in schools as there is today. I also don't recall police officers having to be stationed in the schools full time when I was a student. My brother is an SRO. ( School Resource Officer ) I was a Deputy Sheriff. I cannot even begin to tell you the amount of guns and weapons we recovered from Middle Schools and High Schools. We even got weapons from grade schools. You're telling me that schools are safer? When is the last time you set foot in one?
You talk of aggression? How many teachers are assaulted in schools annually? Since when do teachers need combat pay in order to do their jobs?
Kids are getting too much homework? Too bad. Maybe a little of it might soak in and we'll get some more intelligent kids, ya think? And why do YOU have to do their homework for them? I thought it was their responsibility to do it, and YOUR responsibility to see that it gets done! The teachers are there to teach. That is THEIR job. And if they are not producing results, then why must the parents "tutor"? What are we paying all these taxes for?
I worked in State government. I lost out on annual pay raises because the Governor always directed those raises to teachers salaries. If anyone in the state got raises, it was the teachers. It's funny, all that money they get, and the kids are still coming out of school dumber than a hammer.
Ever go to McDonalds? Teenagers work there. ( And I am not saying this of ALL teenagers, but a good chunk of them. ) I place an order for $6.01. I hand them a $10 bill and a penny. They stand there looking stupid at me because they cannot make the correct change. If the damned computer doesn't figure it out for them, they stall right out and get a brain cramp. That's todays education for you.
If kids are spending more time watching television and playing video games, who's fault is that? The parents. If your kids have time to do that, they have time to do their homework.
You said something about teachers getting masters degrees and further education. I know a guy who is the computer tech for our local school system. He can't spell even basic words. I'm a high school dropout and can do better than him! I know teachers who can't even make a complete sentence! So this is higher education? If they're a representative of higher education, I'll stick with being a dropout! I can make a complete sentence, spell, and punctuate. Know why? Because I try to do well. When you have educators who don't give a damn, it reflects onto the kids. And it surely is.
If kids cannot produce, flunk them. That's the way it used to be, and it works. Nowadays the practice is, "We don't want to flunk them because it hurts their self-esteem." Bull !! So you promote a lazy kid into a higher class with kids who actually worked hard to get there. You tell me how that's fair!
I don't know how you're assimilating your statement with Christianity, but I can assure you....... Christian schools produce better results than public schools, that's a given fact. Maybe if public schools went back to basics, taught right and wrong, morals, and did as God commanded, you wouldn't have the problems you have today.
I think your statement is full of holes and is invalid.

Not too far from where My kids go to their Catholic School there have been 3 rapes (KIDS are being RAPED by other kids DURING school!) in the local public middle school. My thirteen year old is taking trig and intro chemistry, and studies a foreign language. My Kg student is reading at what the public schools consider a 2ND grade level and is NOT one of the top students in her class. When they safely graduate high school they will be eligible for any Ivy League school they choose. A majority of the graduates from the local public high school do not go to college, and those that do predominately go to certification programs at trade schools. My kids are taught critical thinking skills, personal decision making, self-esteem, stewardship, and all the fundamentals. The moral atmosphere definitely helps. I have experienced both settings and I can't say much about the past, but for today I can tell you that having a set of moral guidelines that everyone adheres to definitely supports the learning environment.

I don't know where you got your facts, but you need to stop reading fairy tales!
I am 58. Schools, when I was growing up number one, had discipline.
Second, they taught the three "R's", reading, 'riting, and 'rithmatic.
Schools when I grew up taught morals, not this tolerance garbage of today.
Schools had prayer and the pledge every morning before starting.
Schools taught God since we were and are a Christian nation!
Once God was kicked out of schools, the morals in this country went straight south.
Once He was kicked out, crime soared.
Kids were paddled in school because they were caught doing wrong. I don't know about other schools, but at mine, if I did wrong not only did I get it at school, the school called my Parents and I got it at home too.
Teachers today aren't required to get a masters. I don't know where you got that but there again you listen to fairy tales. All that is required is a certificate: They don't even need a BS.
If the child deserves to be flunked then they should be.
That's enough.

The schools were much better in the 70's. Personally I built a speed boat when I was 12 and restored a classic sports car when I was 15. We had algebra in 7th grade and calulus in high school. We had shop class, music class, art class etc. and all the basic too. Today the beurocrats take all the money.

You have several things @ss-backwards here. Most teachers, in my experience, want the parents to do their job for them. I am fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home mother, and I have yet to meet the teacher who doesn't expect me to do at least half of their job for them. My job is to teach my children good morals and to take good care of them - which includes seeing that they get to school - where the they are supposed to be taught, because that's what my husband's tax dollars are paying for.
By the way, for what it's worth, I'm an atheist. I think our schools are in trouble no matter how one looks at it:-(

Because they were.., children behaved in school because they were afraid, children today have no fear, usually, of consequences, they either don't care or don't know. The schools were better because teachers could really discipline the kids AND they were allowed to show that they loved the kids, not supress it. They were also allowed to let God's hand be on them. They realized they had a purpose for being there and they accepted it.
