Here is a book that may help, I don't know if you are Christian but if so here is what I told my children.
ECCLESIASTES 3:19-20 Man's fate is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath, man has no advantage over the animal. Everything is meaningless. All go to the same place; all come from dust and to dust all return. (NIV)

As faithful and trusting as a german shepard is, I know they must go to doggie heaven. I believe my geman shepard Bow did. I had him for 17 years. He was the most devoted, loving, faithful dog. He died of kidney failure and the vet couldn't get him in to have him put to sleep, until later in the day. He just watched me all day, I think he was more worried about me and what I would do. It has been 10 years since that day. I do have a new dog now but Bow has given me some good memories and I still miss him and I know he went to heaven, you just can't be that faithful and loving not to.

Sorry about your loss
She has gone to a better place.
"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... "

If we believe in doggie heaven then it's real. I lost a couple of dogs over the years. Keep the good memories with you forever because dog people are good people.

She died quietly and peacefully and was very considerate saving you from that awful, final trip to the vet.I think you did the right thing as animals sometimes do not want to be disturbed at a time like this. So give her a good resting place and think about the new addition to the family as I am sure she would not have wanted you to continue being upset.

I'm sorry for your loss, but really. Your dog was weak and having trouble breathing, so you put her in a dog house and went on a trip?
What about the vet? Or at least staying home knowing that she was ill?

So sad - i feel your pain. but at the same time, i must ask WHY?? knowing that your dog is ill wold you leave on a trip??? If it was the time for the dog to die, it was time. But why leave her/him alone???? At least the dog is in a better place now.
