There are creams that you can put on your skin to numb it up. They have to be applied an hour before the procedure. One is EMLA cream. Your doctor may prescribe some for you.

However, do what we women do when in labor. Pick a focal point in the room, like a light or a picture, or someone's necklace or watch (I used my husband's watch). Concentrate on that object, taking in very slow breaths through your nose and breathing out through your mouth. Put ypurself into a trance so you are distracted. Don't let yourself think about the toe...think only of that object and your breathing. Practice at home before you go.

After the procedure is done, ask your podiatrist what you can do to prevent the same problem. Some people have chronic ingrown toenails because of a physical abnormality. He should be able to give you some ideas of what may help.

bring a cast iron skillet and knock yourself in the head right before the dr sticks the needle in.............seriously, have some one there with you who can always make you laugh...have them stand and talk to you while the dr is working ....it always works for me....you're still going to feel the pain but it's less noticable when you're laughing with a friend..good luck.......p.s. in the future.... cut your toe nail straight across and leave the nail long enough that you don't cut where your nail meets the cuticle along the side....it only took one of those to teach me...never had one since...peace

Try to think about something you like with your eyes shut tightly. Think about great times in your past or relaxing places like the beach or something. If that doesn't work try to relax and ignore the pain. Relax and ignore the pain. That works for me
