You never hear Christians preaching about how women should not speak or how people should speak in tongues or how people should not be educated....
But you sure do hear alot about how gay people are evil...
Why this selective hearing among Christians?

If any man think himself to be a prophet or spiritual,
let him acknowledge that these words I write are the words
Of the Lord.
But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
1. Corinthians 14. 38
- I would make this stuff up... there's more but I just wanted to show up the "christians" who are lying through their teeth in their answers below.

here's one just for you "JesusLovesMe" -
Let your women keep silent in the churches.
For it is not permitted for them to speak.
...for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
1. Corinthians 14. 34-35
Now who's gonna burn?

robert p - the chapter you reference is just more opposition to education, the way I see it...
Sorry, man... I didn't write these words:
"For the wisdom of the world is Foolishness with God... he taketh the wise in their own craftiness..."
What is pro-education about that?
You guys can't fight scripture with me, so you might as well give up...
and no I will not join a bible study... that would be about as foolish as asking you to hold hands in a gay pride parade...

danny_boy_jones :
to suggest that I attend bible study when I have a copy of it right in front of me and I have already chosen my beliefs is mildly futile...
You are suggesting that conformity to public opinion is more important than the actual words therein.

Lastly, I am not anti-christian...
I am just pro-education. I have not recieved any answers confirming a strong Christian belief in anything other than anti-gay sentiments so you have all cooperatively answered my question.
Thank you.

Seems to me... Modern Christians only take what Paul said and did as doctrine. Most ( not all ) modern Christians hardly ever emulate or use the life of Jesus Christ as an example to live a life that is Christ-like... NOT ONCE... has Christ EVER judged or castigated ANYONE for being gay in the Bible. Throughout his ministry, he was all embracing, ever gentle, ever loving and ever kind to one and all.
WHy they do what they do? People now same as 2000 years ago... nothing really has changed... if some portion of society is considered "outcast" or minority...it is easier to hate, it is easier to blame, it is easier to judge, it is easier to accuse, it is easier to smite others... and DEFINITELY easier to gather together to look down upon and belittle those whom we see as polluted and evil... Not only the gay people, throughout history... the Native People of every land they have pillaged, every people that are different from them in color, culture and creed... they have USED weak verses in the bible to justify their greed, hate and self-benefitting activities.
On the sidelines, if we compare the preachers you see at the pulpit, how much of similarity do we observe of them to similar to Christ's Loving, Gentle and Humble ways? How much similarity do we see that is similar to Apostle Paul's Caustic, Smiteful and Accusatory ways?
In essence, Modern CHristianity is no longer a faith based on the values that Christ taught, the way he taught it and the way he expressed it. It has become a faith FRONTED with Jesus as the poster boy but expressed from the ways, methods and examples set by PAUL instead of CHRIST.
Surprising and sad that devotees would rather follow examples of an Apostle more than the one whom they deem as the King of Kings and Lord or Lords.. the source of their Liberation from Eternal darkness

On the contrary, some Christian denominations are based almost solely on the words of Paul so your comment is inaccurate in that sense. I think one reason people concentrate on the gay issue however is because it is a "hot button" with most people, Christian or not. By the way, no real Christian would ever say that gay people are evil. There is no such thing as an evil human being as all were created by God. There are however evil deeds. We call that sin. The practice of homosexuality is in our teachings a sin but it is not any more of a sin than would be any other.

Every proponent of religion or philosophy cherry picks what they want to believe.
Fortunately some Christians have made allowances in their belief for modern ideas, like the equality of women and homosexuals. They're more open to change and accepting scientific ideas about the origins of the world.
The scary ones are the fundamentalists who claim the bible is completely infallible. They'll pretty much go for the insane stuff, including not allowing women to teach in public, believing that Satan is somehow running secular society and ideas, that the earth isn't old and that evolution is bogus, that harry potter is witchcraft, the end days are near, and Jesus is going to enter the "terrible world" at any moment. Fortunately, they're in the minority. For now.

We answer the questions you pose most often, just like this one. You are preoccupied with homosexuality.
The problem with this forum is that there is so much deceit. Anyone can have more than one alias and no one knows who they are. They can pervert messages in an attempt to make Christians appear foolish.
If you really want the answer's to your questions, join a church and get involved in a Bible study. You should be in no more danger of being converted than if you took courses in Greek or Roman mythology . . .right?
Christians will lovingly invite you in and show no animus toward you. If anyone does, they are not Christians.
Yes, homosexuality is a sin, as is blasphemy, failing to honor your father and mother, covetousness, or telling lies. Anything that you do that is not rooted in love is sin.
Love, for a Christian, is best defined by Paul in 1 Corinthians, chapter 13. Paul also said that in Christ, there is no male or female. He also said that Christians should submit to one another.
Paul would often differentiate between his personal opinions and the commands of God. All of his writings were letters that were often in response to specific questions or problems in some of the Churches.
Some of the solutions were practical, to avoid confusion. Women and men, typically by law, were seated on opposite sides of the church.
Women, as a whole, tended to have little education and were known to yell across the church to ask their husbands questions. This was disruptive.
Education was encouraged by Christians. Teachers, both male and female, were highly prized. The Christian faith gave more creedance to women than the culture at the time liked. Christians walked a fine line, and were encouraged to comply with the law. It was actually custom and law that you are confusing with Christian doctrine.
You can overcome your lack of understanding by getting into a Bible study. You would not be permitted to practice law just because you could read a law book. There are many court rulings that change the normal interpretation of the law.
You are trying to be legalistic about something in which you have no formal education. Jesus warned about this practice. I encourage you, again, to join a Bible study and approach it like any other learning experience, with an open mind.

As far as the part about women not speaking in Church, you have to realize that 1 Corinthians is a letter. Not everything in it is speaking directly to us. In Corinth, women were shouting across the meeting room, asking their husbands questions on spiritual matters. As things were during the first century, men knew far more about Judaism than women did. Christ broke all barriers, including gender, so now women were given positions in the church and allowed to speak in church gatherings. Given that women were given the ability to speak in church, the explanation that women shouldn't speak should be dismissed as a misinterpretation.
Dude... you should seriously consider going to church more if you think most of what we talk about from Paul's writings is about gay people, or consider reading the bible for yourself.

I don't know enough about what Paul said to agree or disagree about the focus on the homophobic and anti-gay comments, but as a civil rights advocate for gays, I am glad to read your post and to learn that Paul had a lot of anti-equality and extremist positions that discredit his anti-gay comments. Thanks for posting.
In response to an earlier post:
We are all "homos," unless you're not human: homo sapiens.

Selective hearing? The Paul books are some of my favorites. Paul was an awesome person for God. I don't remember reading much of anything from the Paul books about gays, and gay is wrong, but it doesn't say women should not speak, it says that a beautiful spirir is gentle and quiet...or somethig of the nature. YOU are sure taking quite a bit out of context there buddy.

Don't know where the Bible says people are to be uneducated. Women are only not permitted to teach in church and Paul actually says we should not speak in tongues unless it can be interpreted. Please read 1Cor 12-14. As for the gay agenda if you do some research you will find that Christians are simply responding to it, we didn't start the arguement.
