Since the 1940's, when India became Independent of the British, Modandis Gandhi was called that. Prior history on India, I don't know. I hope this helps.

I am sure it's Gandi. He led a revolution against the british, and even almost killed himself by starvation. He wanted the british goverment to let the govern themselves.
