I have a friend like that. I just let her know that her friends are her family too. That know matter what happens she'll ALWAYS have us.

Well regardless of age I think the best you can do is offer continued support.Let your friend know you will be there for them whatever happens. Are there specific reasons why his family are unhappy?If so maybe you could help or advise with these.
Without knowing where the unhappiness comes from I cant offer much more

Watch out...there's a lot of individuals out there that really don't have bad families and are looking for negative attention. It may be true....however, find out first before you say things ..ok? In any case the person needs to deal with their relationship issues what ever they may be. So that would be a bit of encouragement that is not off the wall.
