The classics are always good- 20,000 leagues under the sea, Treasure Island, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Little Women, and Little Men. Others that are good are the Little House On The Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder and both the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys mysteries. Many young readers are also really into the Harry Potter series.

It depends. There are so many books out there now for younger kids, that it's hard to recommend them without knowing the kid(s) you're referring to. What are their exact ages? Boys or girls? Are they relatively mature for their ages? A lot of children's books have some pretty heavy themes in them. If you give some more details, I can provide specific recommendations.

These are links to Amazon's and Barnes and Noble's children's sections. If you scroll down, it's divided into age groups. The list is organized according to the most popular kid's books. It's what I use when I'm buying my cousins presents. This way I can tell what's currently popular.
If your kids are relatively mature, I'd recommend the Harry Potter (JK Rowling) books. The A Series of Unfortunate Events (Lemony Snicket), Artemis Fowl (Eoin Colfer), and His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman) Series are also excellent. The 'His Dark Materials' series is one of the best books I've ever read, even though they're technically books for teens. Anything Tamora Pierce writes (And she's written ALOT of books) is a good bet and they have happy endings. They touch on some heavy themes, but the story never goes into too much detail so it's safe for most kids.
