I really like to travel in China, as I am Chinese and speaking mandarin I get around easily. But as for most foreigners the most important issue is the language barrier. An Chinese agency would be a great help in that department. As for hotel bookings etc. It is also easier and handier if you use a local agency, because they usually have the best connections with the local hotels/government, and yes that is still important in a country like China. I suggest you to take a look at http://www.ottic.info/en and maybe contact them, as they build up customized travel plans, suggest unusual sites, find the guide and contact the local agencies for you. So it's still like you're traveling by yourselves but without the hassle. Our company makes use of them and so far they have been very helpful, and now I use them also for my personal trips to China. They do save me a lot of time, then again you do have to pay for it. But they are a Chinese company so when I calculated back to (in my case) Euros it is more than reasonable... I hope that's of help to you!

My wife and I perfer to travel by ourselves, so that we can take our time, and expeirence things the way we want. Sure you might run into a few snags, but thats what makes it fun. You can always find freindly people to help you out. Actually pretty much everything that "ykphil" says I agree with.

Also, if you check out that travelchinaguide.com website that "theguru" listed, you can find a fantastic train schedual that is always accurate.

Hmmmm...why did I answer this question if I just re-iterrated everything the others stated ...??

Have fun on your future China trip and feal free to ask any more questions you have.... it really is a great country.

I love traveling in China but I usually prefer to do it on my own, even though I get lost and sometimes waste a lot of time trying to find my way, I prefer to experience it that way and I always, without exception, find someone graciously willing to help me find my way around.
