If you got it from a repetitive injury (i.e. chopping wood), then stop chopping wood (or whatever) for awhile.
See if ice or heat helps you (gel ice pack or heating pad). Usually they say about 10 minutes on , 10 minutes off?
Get prescription pain meds from a doctor if possible, if over the counter ones don't work.
You could get an appointment with an orthopedic doctor. (or if severe acute pain, go to the hospital ER, but sometimes they are not much help as they tend to see people with pain that they can't prove as drug seekers...so they don't offer much help sometimes...)
I had bad back pain from repetition of chopping wood one summer a lot. Went to ER and go muscle relaxer and pain pills...which didn't really even touch the pain (plus a big bill and a six hour wait)...Complained to someone in charge and got the bill reduced...Spent about a week laying around in bed with an ice pack under my back...didn't help much, but DID numb the area...eventually it got better on its own...sometimes people can have worse than I had that doesn't go away (arthritis, ruptured disc, etc)...Some back pain may need surgery or other treatment..orthopedic doctor appt. should get the best help.ER just wants to get people stable and out of there fast...

Well, I don't have much information to go on, but hopefully this helps. If you're young and you just recently hurt your back it's probably due to some activity you did. You should stretch to loosen those muscles before you do strenuous activity. Try using a heating pad to alleiviate the pain, no matter your age or condition. If you are overweight, you should become more active and lose some of the weight around your middle. The heavier you are, the more weight you carry at your waist giving you a sway back. This puts stress on the muscles and dropping some pounds will help. If you are aging, it might me attributed to the simple fact that you are not as young as you used to be! If you are experiencing excruciating, debilitating pain, see a doctor and have him prescribe medication for that. If the pain is tolerable, an over-the-counter medication like Ibuprofen or Naproxen should help. I hope this helps!

It really depends on the nature of your pain. If you are carrying a load up front then you have to strengthen some muscles or loose some weight. Is it poor posture when sitting or standing? Some times I get a sore back and so I use a heat pad on it and it sure helps. You could try that. Good luck.

You can try Motrin (if you can take it) round the clock 400 to 600 mg every 4 to 6 hours and use warm, moist heat to the area (i.e., a moist hand towel warmed in the microwave). This will help temporarily but you may need to see your primary doctor. He may refer to an orthopaedist if he thinks you have a problem with your back.

Find the cause. Most often it is bad posture, spodylotic changes. These will benefit from exercises taught by a physiotherapist. No medication will give permenant cure.
