My sister in law had a beagle/terrier mix that she did not have time for. Because my 2 year old was in love with the dog my family took over its care. It is driving me nuts that housebreaking is taking so long. The main problem is the dog was left alone so often that it poops where it sleeps. I have a crate that my sister in law had but she poops in it and sleeps near the feces. I tried a see through gate and limited her space; the same result. I have her on a schedule but everytime I see a little progress she's back to going. She never ever goes inside in my presense. She has done this to my wife. I work and have a life I can't hide around corners and watch her. Its been two weeks since I took over her care full time, before that my sister in law was pretty hit and miss although when she moved in she told us the dog was housebroken. Yeah right. She is not a bad dog and great with my kid I would like to save her.

i think you should remove the crate and get her a new sleeping area like another crate- the reason being that the old crate must have had too much scents left from the previous pooing and peeing. You can get the housebreaking sprays from pet shops to aid te progress. You can lay newspapers in the kitchen and spray the housbraeaking spray onto the newspaper and bring the puppy there., telling it nicely and gently that that should be the pooing place and peeing place. Another thing to take note is the signs of pooing and peeing. like circling around or squatting down-these are signs of the pet relieveing itself. when you see these signs, carry the puppy to the pooing place immediately and praise it when it poos there. do take care not to shock the puppy by screaming at it when you spot it trying to poo. when the pet pees on the papers throw all the soiled papers away excpet for one piece and put it inbetween fresh newspapers as this attracts the dog to the same spot gor relieving itself. always remember to praise it when you see it relieving itself at the right place.

Bottomline-have patience, its juz a poor pup that left its mum. if you do not have the time and patience for this training, please find it a good home.
