Chocolate (Chocolate toxicity):
Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic.

When affected by an overdose of chocolate, a dog can become excited and hyperactive. Due to the diuretic effect, it may pass large volumes of urine and it will be unusually thirsty. Vomiting and diarrhoea are also common. The effect of theobromine on the heart is the most dangerous effect. Theobromine will either increase the dog’s heart rate or may cause the heart to beat irregularly. Death is quite possible, especially with exercise.

Onion Poisoning:
Onions and garlic are other dangerous food ingredients that cause sickness in dogs, cats and also livestock. Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger.

Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet’s red blood cells burst while circulating in its body.

Macadamia Nuts:
Macadamia nuts are another concern. A recent paper written by Dr. Ross McKenzie, a Veterinary Pathologist with the Department of Primary Industries, points to the danger of raw and roasted macadamia nuts for pets.

The toxic compound is unknown but the affect of macadamia nuts is to cause locomotory difficulties. Dogs develop a tremor of the skeletal muscles, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. Affected dogs are often unable to rise and are distressed, usually panting. Some affected dogs have swollen limbs and show pain when the limbs are manipulated.

Other potential dangers:
Pear pips, the kernels of plums, peaches and apricots, apple core pips (contain cyanogenic glycosides resulting in cyanide posioning)
Potato peelings and green looking potatoes
Rhubarb leaves
Mouldy/spoiled foods
Alcohol
Yeast dough
Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine)
Hops (used in home brewing)
Tomato leaves & stems (green parts)
Broccoli (in large amounts)
Raisins and grapes
Cigarettes, tobacco, cigars

Go to www.risingwood.org/OURFAMILY/THEDOGS/knowntoxicfoodsfordogs.htm gives you a complete list of foods you NEVER give to your dog or cat or any animal before you check with the Veterinarian-any Vet you call will give the answer on the phone. Feeding Grapes-Raisins to a dog and it takes several days will have the red blood cells burst and the dog hemorrages-bleeds to death-usually even when taken to a vet very little can be done and in most cases it is kind then to put the dog to sleep for the dog suffers terribly before it dies. Usually starts with terrible diarrea that is uncontrollable with bleeding, severe vomitting also with blood and so on. Chocolate will cause a dog, animal to have a massive heart attack-usually fatal. Also onions, garlic in large quantities, See also www.peteducation.com then click on Foods To Avoid. Also Nuts,Fat Trimmings( can cause Panreatitis-fatal)Bones esp from chicken(can puncture the intestines which requires surgery and even then its so so)The best way to be sure is to NOT feed dogs, animals People Food for the food that is made specifically for them is best. People and animals. have different food needs. People who eat dog.animal food would also get sick -eaventually toxic to the liver, kidneys and so on.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs in large amounts. You would have to give a dog 1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight before you could make them really sick. (milk chocolate)
bakers chocolate is much worse for them. They can both cause some digestive problems even in small amounts.

Grapes and raisins are both toxic to dogs. They can cause some serious kidney problems. I have fed my dog a grape or two when im eating them (green, seedless) and shes never had a negative response. i would never give her more than that, and i rarely eat them myself.

I've heard sugarless candy is toxic to dogs and also mushrooms. Not sure how true these are.

Good question! =)

Yes it is. If you feed your dogs enough grapes it can or will damage its kidneys, not a good thing. Chocolate is also dangerous, but it depends if it is Milk or Dark Chocolate. Dark is way worse for a dog. Someone i know their dog got into a box of dark chocolate and they caught in time but the dog still had to have its stomach pumped. Milk chocolate takes longer to do damage but it still can harm your dog. To avoid this keep chocolate in the pantry on the top shelf or in a cabinet that the dog cannot open. as for grapes avoid them at all cost.

Hope this helps

I never heard anything about grapes, but my dog once ate a whole bag of milk chocolate coins and survived. It's only dark chocolate that can kill them.

Nope, this is only an old wife tale that only ignorant old people with low intellect will believe.

my dog eats chocolate ice cream with raisens on them all the time, they are his favorites. The fats in the ice cream provide fat/lipids to their the fur, and the chocolate & raisen gives my dog antioxidants and energy; i always give it to my dog before we go running.
