A mixed purebred Golden Retriever, huh Che? But anyways they won't travel to the brain without killing him first. Actually they won't do it at all... Um, but one thing that may be problematic is the fact that he is eating all those wild animals, particularly those animals. They carry a lot of diseases that he may have either been exposed to or contracted by consuming it. I'm no expert so don't take my word as a professional opinion, b/c it's not, but I'd have him checked out for more serious stuff man, and tell the vets what he has been eating, this might not even be doggy depression (which does happen from time to time) it could be something that's affecting a much broader scale, but is only prominent to you by his eating habits, and perceived change of affect.

Your dog is probably pretty old for a golden retriever or shepherd. My cairn terrier got pretty weird when he got old, he used to walk around the house making whiny noises and trying to find places to hide. Once I looked all over the place trying to find him and he was hiding behind the clothes dryer. Also, when I took him for a walk, he insisted on going only one direction. He didn't eat much, either, and he had big appetite when he was young. He had cancer, which was treated, but I don't know if the cancer got to his brain or if he was having some kind of dementia. He died a year ago and I still miss him a lot.

Dogs cannot have depression, not in the sense of humans. If they seem depressed, it's usually because they are sick. When dogs (and most animals) are sick, they stop eating and basically act depressed. A dog not eating is a definitely a warning sign to take him to the vet. And no, heart-worm cannot turn into brain-worm.

It is so beautiful that your dog truly has been mans best friend. He is getting on in doggie years, but not past it, sounds like something is upsetting him and really the best place for him is the vets. I hope he is feeling alot better soon.

I would take him to a vet. But he is getting old...and i wouldn't be expecting him to chase any muskrats around anymore.

Maybe he does need a beer. But if he is sick, he will be like what you describe. When you don't feel well, do you feel lively?

i think your dog may be suffering from demensia as he is very old in dog years.
I would recommend you keep him comfortable and happy as he lives out his life.
