It is just called a monitor.

It is not an EKG. An EKG is taken over a period of minutes and measures electrical activity across the heart from different axis.
The monitor has several functions it has a heart rhythm strip, O2 saturation, auto blood pressure on a basic monitor. Some areas like ICU may uses monitors with more functions. NONE of them do an EKG

There are a number of monitors that are used. The one which shows "flatline" - we call it asystole - is the EKG, short for electrocardiograph. The EKG shows the electrical activity of the heart, and allows us to look for abnormalities in heart rate and rhythm, and to look for signs of ischemia (not getting enough oxygen to the heart).

Other monitors include blood pressure, either non-invasive (with the cuff) or arterial (with a catheter in an artery) and pulse oximetry, which shows how much oxygen is in the blood.

All of these monitors beep. We usually choose which beep to listen to, and that is most commonly the pulse oximeter, because the pitch of the beep changes with the patient's oxygenation.

Don't believe what you see on TV. It is rare for a heart rhythm to go from totally normal to "flatline". There are usually some warning signs that things are going downhill - increased or decreased rate, abnormal rhythms, and that sort of thing - for minutes to hours ahead of time.

It's an EKG or EGC; either way, it stands for electrocardiogram. It monitors the heart and shows whether or not it's beating normally (or when it's not beating at all!). Some of the more complex ones can also monitor your blood pressure through a BP cuff, and it can measure the oxygen in your blood through a small device that fits over your fingertip.

I am not sure of the 'proper' name for it, we call it the 'vitals monitor'....
An EKG is not the machine that monitors your vitals. An EKG show activity in the different cavities of the heart . It is a diagnostic tool. The monitors are just that....they monitor your breathing, heart beats, blood pressure and O2 levels.
