when it ask to enter a validide key at boot, click on the phone option. it will give a phone number for you to call and the phone system will ask for the id on the screen. enter or say the numbers it asks. after you go through that step, it will say it is already activated and connect you with a live person. tell them you are doing a fresh install on your computer and THIS IS THE ONLY COMPUTER THE KEY HAS BEEN ACTIVATED ON. he will then proceed to give you the numbers that you'll enter into the lettered boxes on your screen. it's a free call. i use this service all the time when repairing customers computers.

if it is saying already activated u should be good unless u see a msg ox XXdays remaining to activate windiws

if u have a XP COA sticker on ur machine activate again then change product key to what u have. Then use the activate by phone method, call 1-888-571-2048, when they ask if u r calling to activate press 0, then after a couple seconds press 1 this will get u to live support, they will ask u to read the long number provided to u from the activation window, then tell them reactivation, bad hard drive only on one machine etc etc then they will generate u the activation number. trust me i do this all the time as a tech
