I just re-installed Windows XP on my computer.. I've done it several times before, but I used my friend's disk this time and now it's counting down from thirty for me to activate it and it's saying I can't activate it because it's been done too many times or something.. what can I do besides buy a new disc?

Get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your compute

That's why Microsoft came out with this activation feature, they don't want you to install it on more than one computer. With windows 2000 or windows 98 you could buy one disc and go home and install it on your pc. Then you could give it to a friend and they could install on their pc too.

I see only 2 solutions here, buy a new copy of windowsxp or ask friends etc. and find a windows 2000 disc. It should run on your pc but you may have to update some drivers for your sound card etc. to get everything working. Any software that you have should run ok with 2000.

Firstly you put the installation CD in (you have to start your computer first to enable the CD drive to move). Then restart the computer. To a certain extent, the screen will show 'Push any key to boot from CD' and you have to click on any key, either Enter or Spacebar, it doesn't matter. Then wait for the installation files to be copied onto your computer. It does this automatically, so don't worry. Then it will display the drives where you can install your OS. Usually people do it on C drive. But firstly you have to Delete the C drive to erase whatever OS that have been on the C drive. Then you have to create it back. All of this can be done by following the instruction on the screen. Then follow the instruction to install the OS on the C drive. For your information, OS means Operating System, like in your case, Windows Xp.

its not the disc, if u have a XP COA sticker on ur machine activate again then change product key to what u have. Then use the activate by phone method, call 1-888-571-2048, when they ask if u r calling to activate press 0, then after a couple seconds press 1 this will get u to live support, they will ask u to read the long number provided to u from the activation window, then tell them reactivation, bad hard drive only on one machine etc etc then they will generate u the activation number. trust me i do this all the time as a tech

Hi,

the thing is if the activation code had been used many x already that means that the license agreement with Microsoft has been registered previously. So your best bet will be to get a fresh copy of XP along with the license number, but make sure you uninstall all previous iterations of XP that you already have and reboot your system to clear RAM

I can't wait till you friend has to reinstall XP on his computer.

What did you use the several times before?

You could have copied the old product key off your computer before you formatted it.

Windows License is usually one-user per disc...in this case your friend. You are not supposed to use it as your friend has already activated/registered for his/her own PC. You have no choice but to purchase the new/genuine one.
