Most tattoos by ancient people were to demonstrate religious devotion, status (and things like number of animals killed, or enemies etc), or for beautification. Same reasons as today.

My best guess is protection from evil spirits and for develping immunity to snake bites.
Some cultures still mix snake venom in with the ink they use to tattoo with for that very purpose.

I trust bowl dude. in case you need to ask in case you need to. you mustn't. Tattoos are for all times. Even getting them bumped off would not get rid of them thoroughly and its wayyyyyyyy extra painful than the unquestionably tattoo... identity say bypass.

ANCIENT WORLD--MEANING WHEN?
LONG TIMEFRAME...
BIBLICAL....
RELIGIOUS PEOPLE OF THE BIBLE DID NOT GET TATTOOS..
AGAINST SCRIPTURE....
FEW "BIBLE" RELIGIOUS PEOPLE GET TATS TODAY--
STILL AGAINST THEIR RELIGION.
PAGAN OR NON BIBLICAL PEOPLE DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH BIBLICAL WORLD.
CHRISTIAN BELIVERS CAN'T IMPROVE ON GOD'S WORD BY GETTING A TATTOO BUT RATHER TAKE AWAY FROM IT.

I studied something about this once. The tattoos they had were symbols representing who they were, what their religion was, what tribe or family they were from, and perhaps what country they were from.

1Cr 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
this is just one of many verses that tell me tattoos are not a religious oriented thing....it is defiling the temple of the body

Depends. Decoration, to look more fierce in battle, right of passage, mark as a member of a group, show actions in battle, show rank, and yes to please their gods. The reasons change group to group.
