My mom and dad don't want a dog. I want one really bad. Begging or getting a smaller pet are both not options. My mom says that she doesn't want an animal, and i know that i will take care of it, but she thinks that i wont! Any advice? I keep my room clean and make my bed, but how can i convince her?

Keeping your room clean and taking care of an animal have nothing to do with each other. Keeping your room clean is something every kid on the planet is expected to do, and most do a reasonably good job of it. Does this mean every kid is able to take care of a pet? Absolutely not.

Questions to ask yourself:
-Who takes care of it while you are in school? It needs supervision and bathroom visits. While it is a puppy, it will not be able to stay alone or hold it for more than a few hours.

-Who gets up at 3am to go to the bathroom with it? Will your parents allow you to do that, or will they have to?

-Who pays for the kennel or pet sitter when you are on vacation? Not to mention the shots, heartworm prevention, spay/neuter, toys and bones, food, misc. vet visits, and the other essentials? What about paying for the puppy itself? You’re looking at $600-$1000 in the first year alone.

-Who dedicates the time needed to properly train this dog? Even the bare minimum, like potty training, takes a lot of time.

-During potty training, even if you’re very careful, there will be accidents. Puppies also chew everything they can get a hold of. Will your mom like her nice carpet stained? Will she appreciate things chewed up?

-Can you drive it to the vet yourself for its shots? Spay/neuter? Emergencies?

Will you be able to pay for and do ALL of this yourself? Is it fair to ask your parents to pay for and help care for a dog they are against having?

That's a tough one, but they are your parents. They're just looking out for you and the dog. Dogs are actually a LOT of responsibility; the equivalent of an 8 year old child, in my opinion!

However, if you cannot be convinced otherwise about getting a dog, I would go to the local animal shelter and see if they have any volunteer opportunities working with dogs. Try volunteering there maybe 2X a week, feeding, walking and grooming the dogs for about 3 months. You'll either change your mind or you won't. The important thing is that you need to demonstrate to your parents that this is something you really want and something you really can handle. Good luck!

You might not be able too, After all their house their rules, Did you ask them why they do not want a dog? Sit sown and talk to them and find out why. Then list the pros and cons of having a pet. Caring for a pet is a lot more responsibility than just making a bed and cleaning a room. Any type of pet is a lot of work. But a lot of reward too. So stop begging that will get you no where. All you can do is sit down and talk to them.

I like what Alli said. Something else to consider though is why your parents are saying no. The reality of it all is, a dog can last 10-15 years after you get him. You might not be living at home that much longer. If you go to school, they don't exactly allow pets in the dorms. If you join the armed forces, your life is never your own and you can never have a pet there. If your parents are not willing to take care of the pet after you leave, you will be doing the animal a disservice. Be patient. Something you might consider is being a foster home to dogs until they find homes. That way you can really help dogs, learn about them and be around them, but the dogs will go to their forever homes after your training and socialization. It is another option to consider. Good luck and keep being patient.

I have tried for 20 years to convince my parents to let me get a dog, but they never allowed it. They are just not dog people, and will never own a dog. But, I'll still try to help you out. You should do LOTS of research on dogs. Find out exactly how to take care of them, the supplies you will need, and how much time they require. Make sure you have the time to take care of the dog. Also learn about house breaking and crate training before you get a dog/puppy. FInd out costs of caring for a dog. And research different dog breeds so you have an idea what kind of dog you want. Getting a dog/puppy from a shelter is the best way to go. And also decide if you want a puppy or a dog. I personally like adult dogs better because they are usually already house trained, fixed, and up to date on vaccines. Once you gather as much information as you can, present it to your parents, so they know how serious you are about wanting a dog, and also so they know you are responsible, and you know what goes into owning a dog. Good Luck, I hope this helps. I hope your parents let you get a dog. Mine never did. But now I live on my own with 2 cats and 1 dog.

I think if your mom and dad don't want a dog you must then respect there wishes if you are under their roof. You will in no time you'll see, be on your own then that's when you'll get what your heart desires. In the mean time keep this desire in your mind constantly and you will see a dog, the dog you desire badly will manifest in your life sooner than you think. Just pretend you have it and it will come. Having a dog is a lot of responsibility which your parents believe they will incur and do not want to have. You need to respect that. Keep respecting them and before you know it a dog will appear in your life if you really keep it in your mind. Stop asking them and ask God, only once, then keep the vision of having this wonderful pet in your mind and what it would be like and be patient and trust that it will come and it will come. So my suggestion is, stop trying to convince her, believe you have already received and be grateful for what you have already. Everyday envision what it would be like to have this dog, then release this vision into the universe and go about your day feel grateful. Be excited, as if you have the dog of your dreams with you already, then you'll see, you will have it. You sound like a wonderful person and you will receive everything your heart desires. Believe and remember to be patient.

Unfortunately until you live on your own they make the rules. you would be alot worse off if you did get the dog without them knowing then the both of you would be on the streets right.
