Quarantining is, as others have said, basically isolating the new bird(s) from the old. It should be done in a separate room where the birds have no access to each other, and there is little air flow between the two rooms the birds are in. (When I quarantine my birds, all of my birds are downstairs in an open area, so I put the new birds upstairs in my room with the door shut. They still get attention from me, but they need their own space so there's no risk of my others getting sick.) Birds that come from different sources can carry diseases that can easily spread through air to other birds and infect those already in your home. A basic quarantine is about 30 days, but some go longer than that. 30 days is usually a good amount of time to allow any illness a bird may be carrying to work its way through and out of its body. In the meantime, the bird should see an avian vet to make sure that everything is well on the inside and the outside. If you can get a clean bill of health saying that the bird's perfectly fine, only then would it actually be safe to break quarantine (given your other bird is also healthy and cannot pass illness to the new bird). It's always best that during quarantine, the people do their share of the work, too. When interacting with the new bird(s), change clothes and at best, shower before going to interact with the old bird(s) and vice versa.

Basically what you do is keep the bird away from other birds.
Usually if you bring a bird in to an area where there are other birds or before you bring the bird in to the permanent place where he Will be staying you keep him in a separate area just in case he has any hidden illness that can not be seen or that will come up in the usually 30 days that you quarantine. So you lower the risk of other birds getting infected.

Hi there. I think you are referring to quarantine. This is a practice many bird owners use to ensure the health of their other birds. When a new bird is purchased keeping it away from other pet birds in a separate room for a number of days is what quarantine means. That way if the new bird is sick, he/she won't infect other birds. Sometimes birds are raised in cramped unhygienic conditions and can pick up diseases in their environment. Usually most diseases will present themselves in a 10 day period. Sometimes, kids are quarantined from other kids when they are sick by being restricted to their room until they are cured. Have a great week.

Quarantining a bird means that the state health officals take the bird and keep it until thier vet looks at it and gives it a health check up to make sure it is not sick or caring a virus or disease or some type of insect from another country that your country doesn't have.

Do you mean quarantining? That's when you keep the bird separate from other birds (or animals). It's kept in "quarantine" just in case it is carrying a disease that could spread. They'll keep it there for however long they suspect the incubation for the disease the bird might have takes.
