I believe that a successful marriage can occur across cultures, however, sometimes it can be a challenge. It is very important that both people understand the other culture. Even slight differences can make for huge misunderstandings. It is not the fault of either culture - it's just the fact that there are cultural differences.

When the difference is religion, it can be even more problematic if there is not total respect and understanding of each other's religious beliefs. How religious is this guy? Will he expect your mother to convert? I do not believe that anyone should convert to a religion solely for the purpose of marrying. Religion is a life-commitment and is often the most important aspect of a person's life. If he expects her to convert, then it means he does not respect her non-religious stance. This is something to be concerned about in my opinion.

It always depends on the 2 people involved. It can work wonderfully - or it can be a disaster. What is important is that they go into the relationship willing to learn about each other's cultures and respect it without expecting each other to conform to something they don't believe in.

We suspect this guy married my mother-in-law primarily for her money. It's her life. If this is not a good relationship for her, she'll learn the hard way.

She has free agency. Just show her you really love and care for her. Make sure she knows you understand and respect that it is her choice. She'll be more willing to listen to advice.
