It depends a great deal on what type of aircraft it is, too. For example, the cabin-class twins I fly have no need (assuming I've done everything right) to lower the gear prior to the outer marker. On simple VFR flights when I use the traffic pattern, I usually lower the gear on the downwind leg, just prior to turning base. When I flew Air Force fighters, the gear came down about 5 miles out (again, assuming I had done everything right).

The gear is not used to "slow down" military aircraft. The air speed must be at a certain point before the gear is lowered. Otherwise, we maintenance folks have to do Over-sped Gear Inspections.

Having the gear down will cause more drag tho. It's possible that you are seeing flight crews during training missions, using all kinds of configurations while flying.

on final approach using the Glide-slope the planes usually lower their landing gear at about 5 miles prior to the runway but if they are coming in too fast they may lower their landing gear as a way to increase drag thus reducing speed

a million. no longer that i'm attentive to, yet there are lots and far of different airplanes obtainable. The drag produced with assistance from extending the equipment is tremendous sufficient that you many times don't love it extending with assistance from itself. 2. No. it really is as a lot because the pilots to diminish the equipment. when it comes to protection rigidity flights in the U.S., controllers are required to ask the pilots to envision their equipment formerly each touchdown, yet this isn't a call for for civilian aviation. A abdomen touchdown (with out equipment prolonged) can do significant damage to an airplane, yet frequently it really is repairable and the airplane should be placed again into provider. relying on numerous factors, it gained't unavoidably reason a violent crash, both. frequently the airplane in simple terms skids to an extreme priced end. On commercial airliners and some different airplane, there's a noisy audible caution if the pilots placed the airplane right into a configuration it extremely is frequently reserved for touchdown (alongside with finished flaps) and they have not diminished the equipment. the alternative remains as a lot because the pilots, even if the caution is loud sufficient to substantiate that they don't in simple terms ignore. Even some small airplanes have this function. yet i don't be conscious of of any airplane that take the initiative and reduce the equipment on their personal, with out any pilot enter.

Lowering the gear is part of the pre-landing checklist. When you want to slow to approach speed, having the gear hanging out helps you slow down and get stabilized for final approach.

Our airline states we have them out 5miles prior to the final approach fix on a non precision approach. Or just prior to glideslope intercept on a precision approach. On a visual we must be fully configured to land before 1000agl. So, those guys flying over your house could be using them for drag, or there could be some sort of special procedure they have as to when to lower the landing gear...not sure. :)

yeah, they do that because the landing gears are kind of like air brakes and help slow the plane down so it doesn't miss the runway. also they want to make sure they work before they land, or else they could make an emergency landing, and not damage the runway and block other planes.
