400 dollars of crack that is, and yes, this is true

A better question is, how long before he starts selling all your stuff to pay for more crack? Crack is relatively cheap so he must be buying a lot of it. You may have to turn him in at some point for him to get the help he needs. The sooner, the better. His life is at risk. There is no way to know when his brain will be totally dead. He will just get worse and worse until he is no longer able to function at a job or do simple tasks like taking a shower or find his way to the store and back.

Good luck to you. I hope you have lots of friends and family to help you through.

I don't know how much $400 buys, I've never used drugs in my life. But I have taken care of addicts of all kinds. If he's been on this a long time, his body gets used to it to the point where he doesn't get enough "high". So in order to get the feeling back, he increases his dose. He must know that you know. If it were my dad, I'd use a lot of tough love. Have him committed to rehab. I know it won't work unless he wants it to, but he knows that you know about it. He may want to quit and is so far into it, the thoughts of not taking this anymore scares him to death. It's up to you to start asking around on how you can get him into a hospital. Try every means available. Good luck, and I will be praying for you and your dad.

He can live to the average age of death. His brain will malfunction, but still it will function. He is more interested in getting high. I would leave him to his crack if I were you. Mourn now, bury him later. BTW 12-steps won't help, jail won't help, you can't help. The only thing he can do is make a choice to stop. He must choose to knuckle down and live through the withdrawals. He can only quit if he chooses to. There is a direct correlation between successful recovery and personal responsibility.

If you are living with him, I would advise you to call your mom (if they are divorced) or another relative and ask that you move in with them.
He is not safe to live with. He is not providing a home for you. People who use drugs are involved with bad people and violence is usually close by.
You are not safe in this home. Please get help for yourself (your dad is too far gone) even if it means calling the police.
