I retired with over 20 years US Army and never had a job because I really liked what I was doing. I think your recruiter has the best idea because we need people in the job they can do best and will benefit the person and the military most. We should all learn to love the job we do then it won't be a job. You will in time learn to do many things in the military. I think there is very little I did not learn to do in my years in the service. You should continue your education and do your best at what ever you do. ~

I am biased because I am Infantry(11Bravo). 19 Delta is Cavalry Scout. I believe between those 2 are the hearts of The Army. In a combat MOS I find it promotions come rapidly (I'm 24 and a Staff SGT been in almost 5yrs). If you decided to enlist with these MOS go Airborne and try to get a Ranger contract. Thats high speed. You will be an elite soldier, very promotable and will have the sense of a pride like no other, good luck future "Battle buddy" Hope to see you soon.

Keep in mind that you can go Intel now and down the road cross train for a combat MOS. Back in the day the 11b was the guy who scored low on the asvab. Now they have to score high. Its not the old army now. 11B has to be smart able to handle ALOT of pressure and learn to use a variety of weapons. I respect the 11b they are the front line back bone lead the way troops. The call of the 11b is FOLLOW ME. They are the real soldiers. The best in the military, the best equipment the best trained. If you are going to make the Army your career then a combat unit is a good idea, But if your not sure, learn a trade while in there. Best of luck to you, I served 10 great yeas, wish i never left and right now my nephew is in his 3rd week of BCT basic combat training...basic training. If you go in take the red card and throw it away. you will understand what i mean after yuor there. The best advice i ever got was ...dont let them know your name. If your Drill Sgt knows your name you will be doing push ups on the plane to your duty station. Best of luck super troop...give em hell, your special. your a soldier

Well, I served in communications 05B40 during the Viet Nam conflict. You can still go into Intel and serve with the combat arms. I was assigned to the 2nd/320th field artillery with the 101st Airborne division. The modern Army uses a wide range of high tech and specialized MOS's in all of the combat arms, and more so every day. You may want to discuss the role of intel in each of the disciplines.

What is it that you want to do?
Infantry is going to be right down in there, man to man combat. Especially in the low-intensity conflicts going on right now. Kicking in doors, running patrols, out on the perimeter in the mud stuff.
Armor you're going to be in an Abrams Tank, or maybe a Stryker these days - Good stuff and a lot of fun. I think most of the Sergeants in my recruiting center used to be Tankers. Since most of the combat today is infantry based, you're going to be providing fire support for the ground pounders.
Artillery? You could be in MLRS or maybe Paladins - You're going to be behind the lines (you hope! LOL) delivering a whole lotta hurt on the bad guys. Counterbattery stuff mostly these days plus blowing up designated bad-guy targets that the Infantry is pointing out.
Since you sound like someone looking for hard-core combat, I think I'd look at that 13-Bravo MOS. It was the route I wanted when I was in ROTC so many years ago. Now, since I joined up at 42, I'm heading towards a 15U.
Thinking about Airborne? Ranger?
Hooah! ARMY STRONG!

If you want to do something that you can use after you leave the army, go with the intel. However, if you are intent on combat arms, think about this. Armor is usually right up there on the frontline, firing at tanks that are firing at them, usually within 1000 meters or so from each other. Field Artillery, on the other hand, are lobbing shells for miles, unless you're manning a howitzer at a firebase.

1. If you can get intel, take it.
2. If you really have to go combat arms, it's
(a) armor for the armor (that's mounted on the tank),
(b) infantry for the prestige, or
(c) FA for being able to do your fighting from a ways
back from the MLR.
I was Supply (92Y) and went to war with a battalion of 13Bs. I also served in the peacetime army with 11Bs. If you can do intel, DO FARKIN' INTEL! There are people who would trade a lung for that job. And if you're qualified, and don't do it, and waste yourself pounding sand, well...that's not the best service you could do, is it.

Listen to your recruiter. Do the Intel bit. That is where you can do the most for your country. You would not be very happy serving next to troops who scored on the low percentiles. Take the DLAB test. If you score well, they will send you to learn a foreign language. This is a good road to a job at the State Dept. after 20 yrs.

First, thank you for serving. We love you for it.
97th percentile? Well done!
You are, of course, free to pursue whatever you wish. But please reconsider what the recruiter says. Smart guys like you are really needed in intel. That may be the best use of your talents and ability. You may be instrumental in saving a lot of troops lives and making sure the bad guys never have a nice day.
