Kinda gross sounding I know! I have a 2 y/o female chi and our friends have a 2 y/o male chi. They both come from great blood lines, are in peak health, have been vet checked and given the green light to breed. My female has finally warmed up to him and is at the prime stage in her heat cycle to mate. She stands for him, her tail off to the side, the poor little guy has tried probably 70 times today and can't get it in. He keeps missing the "Bullseye". This is both their first mating encounter. Any one ever have this problem? Is there anything I can do to help them, as weird as that sounds? I thought they'd get it right the first time since it should be instinctual for them to mate.

Well it's more common than you'd think. I work in a vet clinic and we've had to artificially inseminate some dogs because the boy just "couldn't figure it out." We had two bulldogs come in and the guy would go at it but just couldn't get it in where it belonged. The girl was patient with him but things obviously weren't working out. We ended up doing it artificially, and while it's expensive the simple procedure was effective and now there's a bunch of little bulldogs running around. It's an option for you if the lil guy can't get the job done. Maybe it's something you hadn't thought of!

Some times you need to help..If your dogs are really small you can hold them both on your lap. If not then you hold the female still while owner of the male helps him mount her.You may need to hold them until they lock. Be gentle don't scare them. If that doesn't work then it may not happen. Welcome to the down size of breeding and good luck to you. The seem to need help and you can do this by holding her and guiding the male.

He can't find the hole?! (Tsk, Tsk). If you really want to breed them, you may be able to take them to the vet and get an artificial insemination done as one idea. If they can do this with other animals, like cows and horses, I do not see why they cannot do this with your chihuahua too.

Sometimes you have to give them a bit of help. Seeing that this is his first time he may need some guidence (if you get my meaning). You can just quitely nudge him in the proper place to get the job done.
