Passport is your ID that you show at the customs when traveling to foreign countries.
Visa is an approval from the foreign country to you that it's okay for you to enter and stay for a certain amount of time. Visas are short-term, passports are forever, only you have to renew it every once in a while.

A passport is given by ones own country for travel into other countries.
A visa is granting a stay from the country a person wants to live, work, go to school which is not their own country.

a passport is a document that is used for international travel issued by the state department (or equivalent), it is primarily used to prove identification
a visa is from a foreign country, which is issued to a person who will be traveling to that country
kind of technical but say i want to go to the usa, i would need both a passport from my home country, and a visa from the usa that would allow me to travel there

If I'm not mistaken, a passport allows you to visit someplace (as in vacation); a visa allows you to stay for a determined amount of time (like a student visa to go to college here if you're a foriegner).

A visa is permission FROM another country ( that you are not a citizen of ) ALLOWING you into their country for a specified amount of time.
