Yes, I think it was. The idea of hell is strongly influenced by the Zoroastrian idea, which did indeed come from a volcano. It was imagined that at death, one had to walk across the Chinvat Bridge, which was over a volcano, and those who were evil would fall into the abyss.

Possibly. That's a logical assumption, as Pompeii and other cities were lost to volcanoes. At the time possibly the scariest way to die was by volcano.

Probably... certainly geophysical traces, like what can be viewed at Yellowstone, could be that inspiring as well as volcanic eruption....
