I am a North American who is going to work in Saudi Arabia and I was wondering if I can take my 10 pound shih tzu with me?

In general it is possible to import an animal into KSA but is subject to quarantine in an IATA approved kennel.

1. Check out if pets are permitted in the compound where you will live.

2. Check if your chosed airline will transport animals and how they transport them and their requirements.

3. Visit a Vet and get vaccination certificate

4. Visit official Govt. Vet and get health certificate

5. Send these papers to the Saudi Embassy for confirmation.
Call the Embassy first and ask for the fees.

6. Please note that vaccination might have to be done 4 weeks prior moving date.

Take care and good luck.

It may be possible. There are some restricted breeds that won’t be allowed to enter in any circumstances. When we moved here we found new homes for our dogs, because we thought that the quarantine would be too traumatic for them. There are these really great vet clinics operating in a few Saudi cities, I always take my pets there, check their website out. Contact them, they are very helpful and friendly, it might just spare you a lot of heartache if something was to happen to your dog (I have heard of horrible stories of peoples pet that have just "disappeared", "could not be located" upon arrival in Saudi Arabia). I am also pretty sure that Saudi Airlines does not take pets anymore, so if you were planning on traveling with them it’s a good idea to plan alternatively.

Yes. You will have to contact the Saudi embassy nearest you and fine out what the regulations are. I lived there for a long time and knew many people who brought their pets.
