The D40 can't meter with MF lenses, so you can use these lenses but you'll have to set the aperture + shutter speed manually and the D40 won't provide suggestions. (Only the D200 and D2Xs can meter with old lenses.)
Also, you'll have a hard time focussing manually with the D40's small viewfinder and the lack of a split prism. You can buy a split prism focussing screen from a company called KatzEye, but frankly, that plus a lens would put you over budget, and it's probably not worth the hassle to begin with.

Ignacio, what do AF and IS have to do with anything? As for the Canon option, you get aperture-priority mode but the viewfinder is just as poorly suited for MF lenses. It's not a viable alternative imho.

Have you already bought the D40?

It appears that all lenses with an electronic diaphragm will work with the D40, albeit some of them will not offer manual focusing.

Seems like both Canon and Nikon learned their lessons with AF and they are now offering IS on the lens and not on the camera body.

If you haven't bought the D40 yet I would seriously consider pointing you to the 350D (Rebel XT), for almost the same price it offers a completely different set of functions.

Thanks!

Ignacio
