Please bare with me; The main idea here evolves around one of God's name ''Al Kareem'', the literal interpretaion to this name is ''The Most Generous'', but in arabic this word has a very comprehensive meaning, when we say a certain person is ''kareem'' its not only about financial generousity, its about nobility and honour.
and to muslims, God -by this name- had honoured humans, He ordered His angels to prostrate infront of Adam as His successor in earth: “So, when I have molded him and breathed into him of My Spirit, fall down to him prostrating!” (15:29), this means that He honours us even more than He honours His angels!
so accordingly, we are also ''kareem'', nobles and honourable, we should protect ourselves from being degraded, self-respect should be our highest drives, and we should avoid anything that might make us small or degrade onself in one's eyes.
in that sense, by watching or listening to such things ur degrading ur ''kareem'' honourable eyes and ears, which will eventually make u feel small and lose ur self respect, and u were created to be a noble!!

Islam closes the door before the wind blows it open.
I watch pg-13 movies, but rarely, if ever, do i watch rated-R movies.
I'm sure if there is a reason you need to watch the movie then that might be an acceptation.
But don't make it a habit to watch unlawful or dirt things.
God gave you a brain, you use it to decipher what is right and what is wrong.
Just remember we are always in the presence of God.
And seriously think about this statement:
Islam closes the door before the wind blows it open.
You think about what that means and make your decision.

Some muslims do watch those movies ( i do sometimes) but try to avoid it. Anything that is considered a sin counts as a sin even if its in a movie.

the concept here to is to avoid things that make you want to do bad things....i.e. certain types of music that make you wanna party etc.... So if watching movies that contain R rated material or reading certain books makes you want to do those things then avoid them. Simple eh? :)

I say it would be best to avoid it. But if you do read or watch those things remember they are fictional and you should not be drawn into them so much as to want to do it yourself. But still much better to just avoid them.

Not necessarily. Movies of explicit sexual content are all haram. But movies showing certian haram acts such as eating pork, gambling, killing etc aren't haram stipulating that the act shown doesn't encourage other people to imitate it. Let's say drinking alcohol can be shown in a good or in a bad light.
There is something called targheeb in Islam (warnings, reminders) - ie, to remind people if necessary by providing examples to abstain from munkar (evil).
Comic books for adults as well as anime are all haram because drawing of living characters is haram unless for children. Japanese cartoons (anime) and comics (manga) are bad examples as they promote shirk and violence, brutality and often have explicit content. They are haram.
But let's say if you haven't tried alcohol and you see someone drinking and you see it consequences, it'll probably reinforce you on your abstinence from alcohol.
Love novels are also something that is against Islam as they drive people away from Allah swt and make them fantasise, they show illegal relationships as something positive.
And Allah knows the best.

I watch Nip/Tuck!
Some say it is not allowed and some say it doesn't matter because the actor/actresses aren't Muslims.
