Hi I'm a jockey here in Australia, and I'm 5,6 and weigh 54kgs on race day there are taller blokes than me and look like a rake, but they some how make the weight for race day,it really doesn't matter how tall you are,it's the weight that counts.I'm small so I can get lower in the saddle.(mainly for wind resistance).

I've always wanted to be a jockey, but I'm only 13 and I'm already 5"7 and still growing! So I don't think I have a good chance. I stick with barrels. I have heard that shorter jockeys that are really light will have an advantage because they don't put 116 pounds extra on a horse (like i would **i am very skinny, just really muscular**) But yeah i hope that helped!

The shorter you are the less weight you'll carry. I'm 1.5m tall, 45kg, my BMI is 20 kg/m.sq. BMI 20-25 Ideal Weight
less than 20 underwieght
25-30 overweight
over 30 obese
At least I know I won't die of starvation and the horse I'm riding is not gonna die of tiredness!. When you are tall, it'll be difficult for you to keep down your weight. Someone can be short but he doesn't have muscles, this type of person is not fit to be a jockey

Jockeys have to be light in order to carry weights on the horse, the taller you are the heavier you are...every horse is assigned a "handicap" according to how heavy the jockey is...the lightest jockeys have a massive advantage in a horserace

because you weigh less if you're smaller. and if you're huge, you're going to stick up off of the horses back instead of being able to crouch down on his back behind his neck. It's not that a tall person can't be a good jockey... it's just that it's easier if you're smaller... short people have the natural attributes. tall people have to try harder to make up for it.

because taller jockeys tend to have problems making weight and sit up high like a sail , taking wind...I have seen some taller jocks, Chance Rollins who rode out of TuP comes to mind but generally jocks are shorter...

Like everbody said its the weight, its also becuase your stirrups are really high up, so if you have long legs you wont be able to get into jockey position.

Weight, the less you weigh the less for the horse to carry, but also you must be strong. So if you have muscles, but need light weight, the simple answer is that you should be small.

you might weigh too much or just be monstrous on the horse. also aerodynamics. if you are taller you cover more of the horses body and this is slower.
