Take her out every few hours, and don't bring her back in until she goes potty. Tell her "go potty" or something until she associates the words with the action of going outside to do her business. After a while she will get into a routine. Do not punish her, but if you catch her sniffing or whizzing, stop her and take her out immediately, again using the words.

In my experience, there are four main things to remember:

1. Puppy digestive systems are like human babies...what goes in comes out very quickly. Twenty minutes or so after eating, take your puppy outside. As they get older they develop the ability to hold it, like humans. This is something you'll have to wait out.

2. Patience patience patience. You really need to listen to your dog. If you've had a dog before, you know what this means. And really look at what's happening. Sometimes accidents aren't the dog's fault, it's our impatience to wait for them.

3. Praise praise praise. Even though she's three years old, I still praise my dog for good deeds. Dogs want to please us and we should give them the attention they crave.

4. Repetition. I use the same words, same feeding times, same potty times, everyday. Even if she doesn't go potty, we go outside. Again, after such repetition, you and your dog will learn how to talk to each other.

I agree with other posters that you shouldn't strike a dog or shove his/her face into a mess. If I saw my dog making a mess, I would say, "No! Bad girl!" We would go outside just long enough for me to say, "good girls go potty outside". Then when I would come back in to clean up, I would be all exasperated and she would sense that something was wrong. I would ignore her for 10 minutes (a terribly long time for BOTH of us!)

Just keep working with your dog. You'll both get into a groove. All the frustration now is well worth a lifetime of love with your dog!

Take it for long walks, say 10 to 20 minutes for each walk. If you can do it before and after each meal, then just before you go to bed. Not all dogs are the same, but my dog is to the point that he loves his walks and will come sit beside or in front of somebody in the family. If that person doesn't see him right away then he will start whining at the person and he sometimes hits the person with one of his paws. It is also good to keep an eye on your puppy, my puppy sometimes circles between the front door and the person sitting in the front room watching tv which is a sign he wants to go out.

Are you simply kicking the dog outside and leaving her out there by herself? If so, she probably is getting distracted outside and forgetting to use the bathroom until she's back indoors.

I tell my students that while your dog is indoors with you, he or she should always be where you can see them. Tie a leash around your ankle or attach it to your belt if you have to, put a cat bell on her collar, do whatever it takes to keep your dog within sight distance. You have to be able to actually catch her in the fact of using the bathroom inside in order to teach her that it's wrong. You CANNOT (I repeat: cannot) find a puddle on the floor 10 minutes after the fact and yell at your dog for it and expect her to understand why you're angry.
For times when you can't watch your dog (such as when you're sleeping, at work, cooking dinner, etc), consider keeping her in a crate where she won't want to use the bathroom.

Create a routine that you will use each time to take your pup out to use the bathroom.

1. Pick a phrase that means we are ONLY going outside to use the bathroom. I say, "Lets go outside and go potty!"
2. Put your dog on a leash and take her outside. The leash is so that the dog stays with you and doesn't get distracted and start playing with leaves, bugs, etc.
3. Go to your designated "potty spot" in your yard. Pick one spot. Maybe get a PeePost (available at most pet stores) to put there.
4. Tell your dog "Go Potty" or a phrase that means Go Right Now. Use a nice stern voice. Don't be afraid to point at the spot where you want her to go.
5. Wait until she goes potty. Repeat the command "Go Potty" as needed if she gets distracted.
6. If she doesn't go within 10 minutes, take her back inside and put her back in her crate (where she doesn't want to use the bathroom.
7. After about 5 minutes, or if you start noticing your dog sniffing or circling in her crate, start over at the beginning and do the whole routine again.

Once you spend a week or so getting the dog used to the phrase "lets go outside and go potty," you can string a bell up from your doorknob and start hitting it with her paw right before you go outside. It's important that your dog understand that the phrase means we're ONLY going out to use the bathroom, however, or she'll start ringing the bell everytime she wants to go out to play. You can also try one of the battery operated doorbells as well if you want to be able to hear the signal from across the house.

Hopes this helps a bit.

Dogs are creatures of habit just like humans. Stay outside until he/she goes. If they don't go outside, and come into the house and go, put them back outside right away. Its all a matter of repetitiveness. Also put them outside when they eat or right after sleeping. In time it will work.

i guess you didnt even trainned youre dog before you had the dog ? well you gotta leave the dog out side for a while so til she or he releazie it time to go the bath room out there instead inside the house. dont stand next to the door when she or he is siting front of the door. just walk away so that the dog cant see you there . if you odnt want the dog pee or poop around the house you should get youre dog some bag of puppy diapers from the pet store . its look like a blue with white diaper pads that use for putting on the floor out side .

it is somewhat smart (a minimum of for my canines)...positioned a newspaper or something instant the place your canines many times poops/pees on the carpet. do this for some days, then whilst he poops/pees back on the newspaper, pass it to the spot the place you needed him to do his business enterprise. only make effective once you do this you attempt to make him smell or factor at him on the newspaper so as that he selections up the heady scent of his 'bathing room'. Then do this back for a whilst (newspaper with the spot the place you needed him to poop/pee) and the subsequent situation you will comprehend, he will seek for the recent spot the place you needed it to consistently and ever! It fairly worked for my canines! nicely, stable luck!
