Congressman: Convicted agent's injuries are worse than reported-by Sara Carter (Daily Bulletin)
(Feb 10, WASHINGTON, DC) - An imprisoned former Border Patrol agent who was beaten in his sleep has injuries that are more serious than previously reported, said a congressman on Friday.

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., met with Ignacio Ramos, who was convicted in March for the nonfatal shooting of a Mexican drug smuggler. Ramos is serving an 11-year sentence at Yazoo Correctional Complex in Mississippi.

Tancredo said he was astonished at the injuries on Ramos' body, which he said did not coincide with reports from the prison earlier this week that described his injuries as "minor."

"His bruises were deep and severe," Tancredo said. "His arm, chest and back are black and blue with broken blood vessels on his arm. It was terrible."

Ramos was beaten Saturday night by roughly a half-dozen inmates who recognized him from a TV show that aired shortly before 10 p.m. He was pulled from his cell, which remains unlocked until midnight, by the inmates and kicked repeatedly by the men who were wearing steel-toed boots. The boots are issued to inmates for their daily work, according to the prison's Web site.

Ramos did not see a doctor until Wednesday, Tancredo said.

The prison's warden, Constance Reese, did not return phone calls for comment.

According to a prison press release, "Ramos was evaluated by medical staff at the institution, who determined he had sustained some bruises and abrasions."

Charles Smith, a spokesman for the institution, also said in the release that Ramos' injuries "were minor in nature."

"Inmate Ramos was subsequently placed in the Special Housing Unit pending a thorough investigation of the incident. He will remain in the Special Housing Unit until the conclusion of this investigation."

Prison officials have interviewed six inmates associated with the assault, Tancredo added. The congressman said he is working to move the former agent to a facility where Ramos will be safe.

Representatives of Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Huntington Beach, visited the facility with Tancredo. Tara Setmayer, Rohrabacher's communications director, said she was astonished at the injuries Ramos sustained.

Setmayer said Reese refused to allow her, or Tancredo, to view photos taken of Ramos the night of the incident or any documents regarding the ongoing investigation into the case.

"To underestimate the seriousness of the assault on (Ramos) is a disingenuous characterization by the prison officials," Setmayer said. "He clearly is the victim of a vicious attack. And the ineptitude demonstrated by prison officials with such a high-profile prisoner is troubling."

Ramos and fellow former agent Jose Compean were convicted of shooting Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila in the buttocks and violating his civil rights. Compean was sentenced to 12 years in an Ohio federal prison.

Golden- He was doing his job defending our borders, the man he shot was a drug runner, who escaped back across the border. The Dept. of Justice went to Mexico and tracked him down to testify against these agents. And furthermore, he was shot by 1 bullet , how do two men get convicted for shooting 1 man with 1 bullet?

I talked to Tom about it personally and he told me that he went to the prosecuting team and demanded the case files and was denied, he bugged Mitt Romney about it and Mitt said to leave it alone, and he has continuously demanded Presidential Pardon and has brought up congressional pardon for the two men. Tom Tancredo wears a black armband (that i tied around his arm) to represent solidarity for Ramos and Campeon.. support Tom and he will do whatever it takes to get these men pardoned.. PS. the men were convicted on false evidence on an action that legally should NOT have been brought to court since the only thing they did wrong was that they didnt report their gunfire because they didnt think they hit him (he was a drug smuggler and their actions should have resulted in administational consequences, not legal action) and their lawyers are trying to appeal the judgement (but they won't let the men stay out of jail during the appeals process, which even murderer's are allowed to stay out of prision during their appeal. They did nothing wrong, yet they are being beaten by mexican gangs in jail and tried unconstitutionally, plus they have to stay in jail during appeals.. somethings wrong here

With all the evidence that has been presented, why are they waiting on the President.A conviction can be appealed. They have enough evidence for a re-trial or to overturn the convictions.

I do not know the exact number but at least over 300 thousand petitions have been send to Washington DC for their release. Info is at grassfire.org .. Most of of the evidence is there.

Joe Loya (SP?), Ignacio Ramos' Father in Law was on a local talk radio station this week. Nacho is unable to receive any mail because he is in solitary confinement for his own protection. All of his mail is being forwarded to the following address. (the web site does not state this as of yet, but he did say this on the interview)

Ignacio Ramos
PO Box 972925
El Paso, TX
79997

His wife and children were able to visit him this week thanks to Senator Dianne Feinstein (surprisingly) arranged the visit. They were there for 7 hours and were unable to bring in food or drinks because he is in solitary confinement. It is also my understanding (from Joe's interview) that he is very limited on phone calls and can not have pictures of his family BECAUSE he is in solitary confinement FOR HIS OWN protection.

If they are going to keep him in prison (where he does not belong) they need to move him to a facility that isn't housing Illegal Mexican and Central America drug runners, the Mexican mafia and Gang bangers.

Sorry for the rant, I've been following this situation closely.

No, they were written by HUMANS who don't think children should starve to death because some fathers are sub-human. Uh, refusing to see your child doesn't starve to death is a GOOD thing in YOUR eyes? No HUMAN would punish children in that way. And you call the MOTHERS vengeful? These fathers are willing to let their children fend for themselves out of vengeance. I can see it's impossible for you to grasp why HUMANS don't think fathers should punish their own children with starving to death in the streets.

I wonder at the real reason all this is transpiring, but one question lingers..........What is happening to America ? One day America is going to wake up and smell the 'roses', I only pray that it won't be to late. God Bless America !!

I am outraged at the criminal way our institutions and government do their work.
Prison staff who were at fault here should be rebuked, reviewed and if found negligent fired, if not charged with a misdeed themselves.
We are living in a country that is just shy of fascism.
This sort of thing is an outrage beyond words.
