I also have an 8 day old son and don't want him catching what she has.

If your child was having convulsions, you would have no doubt about it. The twitching is most likely caused from dehydration, and not a seizure.

Put her in a luke-warm bath and keep a cool washcloth on her when you can.

Also, alternate between ibuprofen and Tylenol to help reduce the risk of overdose or kidney and liver damage.

Push the pediyalite and keep her in bed to rest. Make sure she is having at least 6 wet diapers per 24 hours.

DO NOT give her sugars or dairy as suggested in the answers below. In fact, children don't have to eat when they are sick, as long as they take in enough fluid.

As for keeping your newborn from getting sick, wash your hands and wash them often. Other than that, there's not much you can do.

103 fever in young children is not as dangerous as in adults. This is your child's body's way of killing the virus. If her temperature reaches more than 105, you will need to take her to the ER. But not to worry, this is very very common in young children.

Good luck!

My son had a fever convulsion and what your daughter is doing doesn't sound the same. I have seen that kind of "twitch" with a fever and don't know what it is either, may just be related to being hot or cold, like a chill. For a temp that high, (over 101.5) I always give motrin, it seems to bring down fever better. Wash your hands between handling your daughter and baby. A baby that little is probably protected by your immunity, especially if you are breastfeeding (but being so little, even if you aren't, he may be protected).

Bless your heart, it must be very hard to have one so sick and 8 days postpartum too! You will do great--congratulations on your sweet family!

It sounds like a febrile seizure, which is convulsions from a high temp. They are harmless and cause no permenant damage. Or she could just be having chills which too is caused by the high temp. I don't necessarily agree w/ the 106 temp though. If 105 and over then take her in. You can alternate Tylenol w/ Ibuprofen(unless not indicated for her). Encourage lots of fluids!! Ice cream, sherbert are good too. Keep her dressed lightly.

you don't have to listen to the pediatrician. you see what is going on with your child and if you are really concerned then you should bring her to the emergency room asap. it doesn't sound normal, unless she is just having the shivers from having a high temp. when my daughter had a temperature of 103 i not only gave her tylenol but i also gave her a luke warm bath to bring it down. like i said though if you are really worried don't hesitate on getting her medical attention. especially before you go to bed tonight because she could have seizures in her sleep. so just in case you don't go to the emergency room i would at least set your alarm clock to check on her every 1-2 hours if her temperature is still high when you put her down. i hope your little one gets better soon.

When my daughter was 18 months old she did the exact same thing. I took her to her pediatrician who told me to give her Tylenol and plenty of water. I didn't listen to her pediatrician! I took her straight to the emergency room where the nurse in charge snatched her out of my arms and immediately got her medical attention. She spent the night in the hospital, was diagnosed with pneumonia. Take her to the ER if you haven't already and get her well!

I dont know what is wrong with your pediatrician but a temp of 106 is too high! My son had a temp that was 104 and my doctor was frantic for me to get him to the hospital.

I would just take her to the hospital or call 911 and see what they say. I would even call the pediatrician again and just tell him you're uncomfortable with what he told you.
Call whoever you need to, don't ever feel like silly calling and finding out if something is wrong - it's your child.

I would definetly bring her to the ER, it sounds like she is having convulsions from her high fever. Also, so you feel better your son has a natural immune system from you. It lasts about 3 months for bottle fed babies and 6 months for breastfed babies.

I would honestly bring her up to the ER!!! Sometimes pediatricians can be wrong....My pediatrician sent my kids home with ear infections and told me there was nothing wrong with them. I ended up taking the mto the ER and they were both diagnosed with double ear infections. Get a SECOND OPINION!

GOOD LUCK!! Hope the baby feels better soon

If at all possible, video your daughter when she's having a twitching/shake episode then show the tape to an ER doc.
