RSVP - Repondez s'il vous plait

It what's the people put on invitations to really formal do's. IT means to "please respond", ie, let the host-to-be know if you're actually going to the event.

I guess the hosts want to know exactly how many to cater for etc - so they don't have too little or too much and can avoid wasting money.....also to know if to invite someone else in your place (if you're not going), so that numbers (of guests) are kept as planned.

Something along those lines...

First, it's RSVP not RSSVP. It's French for repondez s'il vous plait (please respond).
