Ok, so I highlight a word I typed and press the delete key. The highlighted word won't delete. Or, if I try to type new words over the highlighted word, the new words appear after the highlighted words. This is a new change to my Microsoft word. How do I fix it so I overtype the highlighted words/phrases?

Thanks for your time!

I can't figure out why your Delete is not working, or do you mean the Backspace key? If so the following will fix it;
Click on the Tools menu and choose Options. On the Edit tab make sure there is a tick mark in front of 'Typing Replaces Selection' if not click on it to insert one. When you select text now the Backspace key will delete it or you can overtype it.

That's bizarre. Can you delete it any other way such as go to the beginning of the next word and hit the backspace button.

Dumb question, but is it just one particular word that's giving you problems? If it is it may be in a text box set to "behind text" or the wrap around feature is set. That's the only think I can think of. If this is the case - accessing a graphic that is behind text is a bit of a challenge. To do this press return a couple of times so that part of the graphic is exposed - then you can click on it and delete it.

Although it could be a glitch (try closing and reopening MS Word), you might try Tools>Options>Edit tab and under Editing Options select Typing Replaces Selection. (This is in Word 2003, and probably some previous versions, I do not know if you are using 2007.)

One more option to try: Exit Word. Locate normal.dot on your computer (Word stores it in different locations in different versions, so unless you regularly use templates and know right where to go, just do a Search). Delete normal.dot. Next time you open Word, it will create a new global (default) template. Sometimes this clears out problems without having to do a Repair or Reinstall.
