I've been keeping tabs on and feeding two stray cats that sit on an apartment balcony that is close to mine. I believe it is a mother and kitten. (well, I think the kitten was born last summer) Anyway, all winter I've been bringing them food and water. I usually see one or both of the just about everytime. It has been five days now since I've seen the mom but the kitten is there just about everyday. Is it common for the mother to leave for periods of time? I'm just very worried that something has happened to her. We had very bad weather during the winter and I would still see her. This is the longest it's been without her!!!

The female cat may have had another litter of kittens and is eating when you're away from home.
I also give a raw egg to my stray "friend" along with lots of dry food.
When I give him wet cat food, I'll whistle to him just like calling a dog, and he'll come around within a couple of minutes.

I suspect either one of the following:
1. Something has happened to the mother cat (injured; someone has her; sick; dead)
2. The mother cat has left the kitten to fend for itself because she may think he is old enough. This is natural. In which case, I think you should go and rescue this kitten.

I would be to worried to take a chance. I would bring the kitten in and take it to the shelter if I didn't keep it. It is just a baby so it will ajust to a new home fine.

It's perfectly fine, they do know how to take care of themselves. Someone might have taken her in, or she might have had kittens somewhere...! She will most likely come back!!!!

Maybe she's sought a warmer place to stay, or, even better, maybe someone adopted her! :)
