1) Locate the middle of the belt.
2) place the middle on his belly button.
3) wrap the belt around him twice. Each end goes around him & comes out on the opposite side. These 2 loops represent his body & his spirit.
4) Tie these 2 loops together with the remaining endes. This symbolizes the uniting of his body & his spirit.
5) the 2 ends should hang down. It will probably take some breaking in before this happens.

Ok my question to you is what martial art? Second question is it a sash or a belt? 3rd is does the instructor even care? These are all valid questions as there are a couple ways to tie a belt and it don't matter if it's white or black as depending on the above questions and your answers, they are tied the same with few exceptions. The answer with the link should be fine if it's Karate or a simular martial art.

However something I must point out is. Your Grandson should learn to do this himself and the teacher should show his students how he wants it done. If your grandson is very young then you should approach the instructor and ask him how he wants it done and tie it in front of him asking if your doing it correctly. He if a good instructor should take the time to tecah both of you how to tie the belt.

I say ask because if the school is traditional Japanese they may want the student to do it facing away from the picture of the founder while kneeling down. In Tae Kwon Do it's done slightly differently and I've seen it done differently in different schools. Kung Fu has sashes and they just knot on the left side. See what I mean....standing, kneeling, sash, belt and a whole bunch of differences can be factored in to the simple tieing of a belt.
