Its because of Lent. Mainly in the Catholic sector of christianity. It shows your devotion to Christ.

It is an observance of Lent to give up something (sacrifice) for a week before Easter. Some give up red meat, others all meat, chocolate, alcohol, etc. Usually, it's some kind of food. But some kind of earthly pleasure, if you will. Yes, I've even heard of giving up sex for a week. Many Catholics observe this on a more regular basis in their daily lives and give up eating meat on Fridays. This is the reason many of us who grew up in schools in the larger cities remember being served fish sticks on Fridays in the school cafeterias. I will bet McDonalds sells more Filet o Fish sandwiches on Fridays than any other day.

I am a Christian, but I don't know about this custom. I was never commanded by God to not eat red meat or to celebrate Easter.

nicely in the old testomony it says we shouldnt devour such issues as octopu, scallops, sharks, ells , snakes , snails or turtles in any respect. Fish is a few thing they ate in the course of the circumstances.

because its another form of psychological enforcement. what better way to make you think you are full of sin than to repress natural urges such as food and sex. when you feel these urges you are supposed to seek help from the bible, thus reinforcing the faith that holds them to their belief. sad in my opinion...
