I am so sorry for your loss. Like many animals birds will hide illness so that they will not be left behind from their flock. They sometimes contract viral infection, bacterial infections and even sudden stokes and heart attacks. His age may have been a factor. A necropsy is an autopsy performed on animals but are very costly and many times inconclusive. Studies show that aside from genetics, we can build up their immune systems to fight many diseases off or even prevent them. I found a good pellet food, limiting seed intake to 10% and adding fruits and veggies 10-20% really makes a difference in many birds' health. Studies have shown that all seed diets will eventually lead to malnutrition even if they are fortified. Avoid avocados and chocolate which are toxic to birds and a lot of other animals. We all learn everyday even from our sad experiences.I wish I could bring him back. Give yourself some time. May this year bring great joyous experiences.

There can be many reasons, from fumes to choking on a seed. Also, birds hide signs of illness until they are so weak that they seem to 'drop dead'. They could actually have been ill for some time, and you just didn't know.
They don't suddenly die for no reason; there was a reason! Do as the first poster said, and have a necropsy done, if you really want to know. Even with a necropsy (autopsy is the human equivalent) you don't always discover the cause, and the results will be 'inconclusive'. Sometimes you have to send tissues away for testing, and that is more expensive than the necropsy alone. I have had necropsies done on birds that have died, and both times I got the cause of death. One of those times I had to send the tissues away for study.

Put his body in a ziploc and in the refrigerator, not the freezer. Tomorrow morning, take his body to the vet and have them perform a necropsy.
This will tell you what happened.
It could have been anything, teflon fumes, scented candles, cancer, egg binding if it was female, or another type of illness.
The ONLY way to find out is a necropsy. It is very important to have this done if you have other birds or plan on getting another in the near future as some things can be transmitted from infected surfaces.

In nature, if a bird is sick it will do its best to not look sick, to avoid enemies eating it (predators try to eat sick, weak, and young bird most often). This trait still occurs in domestic birds, so if a domestic bird shows sickness sighns like: falling off the perch, not eating or drinking, dull feathers, sitting on the perch with one foot while awake, sleeping most of the day, and ruffled feathers that probably means it is severly sick.
Does your bird have acsess to food and water 24/7? Were you away during the day? IT may have been cause of shock too, lots of reasons. I can't really help you but the info above might. Sorry about your bird!

If he was really old (15 - 27 yrs) then he might have passed away of old age. If you didn't take him to the vet in while then there must have been some "quiet" disease or infection. I'm not so sure but I'm very sorry about your loss. Give him or her a proper burial

How old was your parakeet? I had one when I was younger and it lived through breathing in smoke from a fire in the townhouse next to ours, it lived for another 3 years or so and then one morning it was died. I think it just died of old age.

Birds are like that. I've had it happen several times.
They are rather delicate and several things can cause it like the last poster said. Even a temperature change. They go into shock easily and die. You have my sympathy. You try to care for an animal(or bird) and they die anyway, it's difficult to deal with sometimes.

Had this happen to me once, and it ended up being because I had new carpet installed and the smell (or whatever they out in the carpet) killed the bird! This is no lie.
