What exactly is it that the cat doing that is keeping you awake?
If your cat is female, and un-spayed, perhaps she is in heat. A female in heat will "yowl" for hours on end, and try desperately to get outside. Take her to the vets to have her spayed. This will end the yowling.
If your cat has already been altered, perhaps they are moving around a lot because of unused energy, kind of like a hyper child.
Get some cat toys and exercise your cat by letting them chase things (yarn balls, toys, etc.) around. This should wear them out before bedtime, and let you get some rest. :)

Because cats are nocturnal animals. Meaning they are more active at night. Keep your door closed or try playing with your cat before you go to bed to help burn off some of the energy.

look up cats on wikipedia it explains the sleeping habbits. a couple remedies that worked for me were close the door to your room. throw anything you can reach at him. get up and chase him through the house yelling as you try to hit him with shirt or towel. it only takes a couple of times and they figure it out. nother one is a couple of pennies in a coffee can shake it in one hand as you throw things with the other
