My cousin bought a cat for alot of maney from the Humane society and they wanted to make it into a mouser for their shelter. Well it was winter when they got it so they kept it in the utility room. They take her in the garage to get her used to the outside but she's afraid of the sun. She hates the outside and now she's almost full grown and she has no manners, when your coming down the stairs of sitting down she pounces on you, sometimes she tries to climb up the back of the chair. Is it too late to turn her into a mouser and if so how do we teach her some social skills?

I appreciate the answers but no need to be rude about ya they bought a cat at the wrong time and unfortunatly had to keep it in the utility room it's not like she was in there 24/7, she was allowed to be everywhere else in the house until she clawed the leather furniture, they would take her for walks outside..long story short yes it is too late for the cat to be a mouser thanks for everything and the situation is more of a problematic kind then a cruelty one, the family loves her soo much nut she would claw everything ... we suggested cat nip but they didnt get it. Once again the situation is different when you know ALL of the details not just the important ones that you read about. But thanks to those that weren't rude about.

cats never listen . Get some mice from the pet store and let one loose in the house see if kitty goes for it. If not then release the rest of the mice outside.

I think you'd probably have better success with a few mousetraps baited with peanut butter to catch the mice.

The only way cats get social skills is by being around people who take care of them, not shut up in the utility room. Of course a cat who has been inside all it's life will appear to be afraid of the sun. What she's afraid of is the whole, big out of doors. When the cat jumps on your chair she's probably trying to get your attention. They like to play -- a lot.

What you need to do is learn more about cats in general and a few tips on how to get them to do what you want (maybe). Go to the library and borrow a book on cats. You can talk to the librarian and tell her what you need and why.

Keep in mind changes are made slowly over time and you need to be friendly and gentle with the cat. If this doesn't work, maybe the cat needs to go back where you got it. I think the cat wants to be a pet and doesn't want a job.

I don't think anything is wrong with the cat. It is your retarded cousin. First of all you don't adopt a cat and stick it in a utility room all winter. This is America where cats and dogs are pets, you know part of the family. Second, you don't take and stick it in the garage and say okay catch some mice. You people are ignorant and the humane society should be ashamed of themselves for letting you adopt a pet. Cats have a natural instinct to catch and attack. The cat is attacking you morons because it doesn't like you. Find it a nice home where it will be well treated.

Good gosh, slap your cousin upside the head! That cat wants some companionship! You can't take a cat and try to turn it into anything except what it is!!! Your cousin has no idea what a cat is. Frankly from what you say, someone should rescue the kitty from there, and the sooner the better. She has gone from a bad situation to a worse one. This reminds me of idiots getting a pit bull dog and trying to turn it into a fighting dog. What can I say? I'm out of words. Well, maybe not. If you are concerned, do something about it. The sooner the better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't teach a cat social skills! You love the cat and the cat will love you back. Of course she has no manners they kept her in the utility room. Can't they buy rat poison and buy traps? She pounces because she wants to play. She is acting like a cat. I feel so sorry for that little cat. Does she even have a name? You don't even sound like you even like cats.

Cats are what they are. You can't MAKE a cat into a mouser, especially one who seems especially timid.

Sometimes cats can be trained, but not always, and never as easily as dogs.

If the cat's "lack of social skills" is bothersome to you, perhaps you could give her to a more accepting home where she would fit in better. Maybe she just needs love instead of a list of rules and expectations. ;(

Cats have very stubborn personalities. Any animal you get from a shelter will have behavior and social issues. Its just the way it is from their messed up life. It probably is too late to teach it new tricks.
