Most likely you're just not eating enough. This is the most common mistake people make and can really hinder efforts. You should be getting a minimum of 1 gram or protein and carbs per pound of bodyweight per day, and your diet should contain 15% good fats daily. This should be spread out over 5-6 meals per day. Also, be sure you're getting good fast uptake protein and carbs immediately after your lift as this is the time when your body is most anabolic.

Yea steroids are bad news. They're illegal for a reason and most of them have significant bad side effects that just aren't worth it.

One thing to be careful about is overtraining. This will definitely slow down results and you can even regress. You should lift heavy, not too many reps, making sure you're lifting correctly with good form to get the most benifit from the movement and not injuring yourself. Focus on the core lifts: squats, bench presses, and deadlifts.

We ALL DO!
Steroids make you bigger by MOSTLY swelling the muscles with more water.

I lift ONCE A WEEK. I use a power rack so I can LIFT HEAVY and LIFT SAFELY.

When I lift, I lift and HOLD THE WEIGHT for 60 seconds, so I do not screw up my joints.

I went from a medium shirt to a XXL shirt.
